Two questions about smelt fishing
« on: Dec 16, 2010, 12:16 PM »
1-what color light should I buy? white/green/multi spectrum

2-can I tie two teardrops directly onto the line like a crawler harness has? or do I need a seperate drop line like a crappie/perch rig?

Thank you in advance for the info. I would like to target these this winter with all of you guys/ladies this year at the at gathering.

The light really doesn't matter much what color it is. As long as you have one.
Tie your teardrops right in the main line like a crawler harness.
I'm not as good as I once was but I am good once as I ever was.

I put a Hali on the bottom with 2-3 teardrops tied right onto mainline above it. I use spikes on em. Like how long they
last in comparison to wax worms. Good luck. Might see yah up to Higgins

A lot of guys use green under water lights or white lights like a car headlight inside a bucket then you put the bucket over a hole with the light facing down.

I myself have a this one from Cabelas, its a green tube light with a white spot light on the bottom. Its worked great for smelt fishing.

I caught a fish once!

Always used clear lites in the past but gonna try green this year also

Also picked up some 2.5" lears that I'm going to use for my spreader jigs/hooks to keep them off the main line a little bit.

Green light is my preference
A short dropper 1.5 inch max with 2 small teardrops or ice fly above a hali or similar lure with a spike or golden rod grub for bait.
Here was our best two hour trip last year on gull. 235 smelt....i decided to quit when I thought about cleaning them that night.

Good Luck,

Personally I feel the green light is more effective-but just having any light is a plus. I use a hali which I replace the chain with mono and a very small hook. Above the hali I tie hooks directly in line.  I like to use small dry fly hooks and I mean small. Tip the hooks with a spike and youre good to go.

I'll trade you all the smelt you want for fresh walleye. ;D
