Be careful on Southbay !
« on: Feb 05, 2011, 10:58 PM »

We had a very rough day on Southbay. Our day started out bad, because we had to help a guy get his four wheeler out of the ice. He broke threw just off of the right side of the bridge. The funny thing about this was that two weeks ago trucks were parked right where he broke through. This should have been a good ending warning sign to call it a day. After watching several snowmobiles come down the bay we decided that we could make it down to our favorite spot for jigging. After getting our  sleds stuck in slush pits for two hours we decided to head for home. The ice is deteriorating in some places where the slush is deep. The ice seemed better on the Pikes Brook end of the bay. We had slush over our boots in several differant places. Once the sleds track loads up, it make the machine to heavy for one guy to lift. (sore back) Be careful around BRIDGE !!!

No they were fishing about 400 yards from the bridge. Another guy we talked to said that he broke through the ice up to his waist but was able to get himself out. He stepped in what he thought may have been a old tip up hole that had expanded. I won't go back until we have some cold nights that will freeze the slush

With all the snow we have gotten plus the rain last night a lot of places will be getting bad.
The snow pushes the ice down allowing brooks and creeks to go over the ice and weaken.
Glad everyone got out ok.

Like trapper said old holes, they erode the ice around them when the warmer lake water comes up through them. This was already happening there last week , I saw a couple hole at least 2' across only a skim of ice on them. Be very careful and have all your safety equipment handy. For the taxes we pay NY should plow the whole lake for us.   >:( >:( >:(
