Dead Sticking Question
« on: Oct 27, 2010, 09:44 PM »
I have been reading on the forum and have seen that a lot of people dead stick for fish.  What is the benefit of dead sticking or a little more information on the theory of the benefits behind this technique??  Why not just use a tip up? Is this just like running a tip up but you get to fight the fish on a rod and reel?

You can dead stick right in the ice shelter.   ;D

It's just another technique/method of fishing, and like Slipperybob said you can do it in your shelter.  I only fish for walleye or panfish with this method.  Usually I'll stick on a huge minnow and wait.  I'll fish it at a different depth than what I am jigging at too.  We can only have two lines in MN, so many guys have one rod down deadsticking and one jigging.

In Ontario we are only allowed to use 2 line total (no matter if it is a rod or tip-up) so if Im not using a tip-ups, I usually jig with one rod and deadstick a minnow with a second rod.

What's the advantage of a deadstick over a minnow and a bobber?  I'm assuming you fish with a closed bail?

Gives you the same presentation to that efffect, but nothing else to encumber your fish fight.  I don't like how sometimes the bobber can be dragged onto the rod tip, nor sometimes you give it a hook set and the bobber offsets your hook set.  The deadstick technique also depends on your rod of choice.  Either a flimsy noodly rod that will dance up and down with the live minnow swimming about our a rod that will only indicate a strike detection.  Eitherway, you probably need a little faster reaction compared to a lightly balanced bobber set up.  It all depends as one can have various set ups from just setting their drag very loose to using a strike light up indicator.

I deadstick with the auto fisherman, leave a few inches of slack line so the fish have a chance to pull the float under a bit before it sets. I usually jig another set up a few feet away.

I purchased HT's Original Ice Rigger to use for deadsticking this year.  First time trying this technique out.  Any suggestions on type of rod to use for this, I usually fish for crappie and gills.

Alot of states don't allow anything the sets the hook other than the fisherman so for many of us we cant use auto fishermen. I always have a deadstick rod down with a minnow no matter what I'm fishing for. Gills wont eat them normaly but it will attract them, and lots of other stuff. About the only time I don't use a deadstick is when I'm seeing several muskies cruising then I just use the jig rod so I have a chance to keep them off my hooks.
