5Lb Propane to Buddy Heater?
« on: Nov 22, 2010, 09:50 AM »
Hey all,

I have been looking at getting a 5lb propane tank this year to connect to my buddy heater to stop going through all them little bottles. It should weight a bit less than the 20lb tank and because my main way of transportation out is my two feet this is important.

My two questions are what type of hose should I get? Is one like this one okay?

Does anyone else use 5lb tanks, wondering how much the tanks actually weigh?

Any ideas, comments, or concerns are welcome!  Thank you!

I use the 5 lb and the 11 lb bottles on mine the 11 lb is fiberglass and you can see the level    best thing since !!   Im not sure of the weight   and I didnt go to the link   but I use 2 types of hoses   1 from mr buddy with the regulator attached   wirks great  goes right to the quick disconnect  and I use a rubber style hose  that stays flexable in the cold    only way to go for sure!!!  you wont regret getting the smaller tanks   as for weight   lol  according to camping world specs:

Tech Specs
Weight: 9.85 lbs.

Dimensions: 8" dia. x 12 1/2".

Warranty: Mfr. one year warranty.

Mfg Part #: 10054

Tech Notes: UL listed.

now add in the propane: 80% of 5 lbs is my best guess

the smaller propane tanks are the way to go instead of those 1 pound tanks. youll need the hose and fuel filter.  also carry along a wrench cause loosening the hose really sucks by hand when its cold out

Thanks all!  I will be ordering the hose and fuel filter made by Mr. Heater.

Those 11# fiberglass tanks are sweet!  But too dang expensive!

Mr. Heater Part# F273701 5' Propane Hose Assembly. Screws directly on the fitting that the pounders screw onto and the other end connects to a 20lb or any other LP tank which uses the same type valve.

I don't know the weight but I have one on my heater.  I have a Ganz fish trap and it sits up in one of the frward corners and works great.
Shut up and fish.

the small 5 gallon work great so does the 10, as far as filter goes never used on e and never had a problem. Not to confuse you or anyone else fo that matter they do have different colored valves. It is my belief if you have yor hose made at  the gas company like I did to get the larger valve. I think it's red and black in color. the part that screws to the tank. Reason being is that it gives better flow in sub degree temps. I learned this the hard way. Good luck to you.

What you are referring to is called a QCC fitting. The colors are to allow quick determination of BTU rating of connector.  Black 0- 100,000 BTU  Green 0 - 250,000 BTU  Red 0 - 450,000 BTU.
I don't know if these colors and ratings are industry standards or not. If you look on the end of it the rating is usually stamped there (100k etc.). I have seen one that was rated for only 35k but don't remember the color.

The next issue  I have had to repair (more than I care to count) is, the QCC fitting has a built in excess flow. Basically its a small bearing and spring inside that will stop gas flow if the flow is greater then the rating allowed. This is for your safety.
To know if your fitting has this hold it up to a light source. If you see light it doesn't have one.
Only problem is some manufactures use a cheap metal ball bearing that corrodes if any moisture gets inside it (see a problem here), which in turn will not let any propane  through.
This probably explains most the posts on this site about problems with the hose or not getting any heat out of propane......
