Quick change
« on: Jan 07, 2013, 03:22 PM »
When you are marking fish under the ice but they don't bite, even though they follow it up and want to switch baits what do you guys do to make it go faster.  I always have two tip downs in the water and one jigging,  with a max of three rods here in WI.  Do you guys have a couple rods and have different jigs on each, or how does attaching a snap to the end of line so that you can change quickly, and not waste time tying and retying jigs.

Thanks

I usually have a few rods tied up with different jigs that I have a lot of confidence in.  I've tried the different quick snaps, but they cause a lot of horizontal jigs to not hang horizontal.

I just try to warm my hands/fingers up before I get ready to tie something new on...that usually helps me tie faster.

I usually use a regular snap.

As Rapids mentioned they can sometimes affect the action of the jig, But i think it would depend what your targeting and your lure.

I myself generally target walleye, lakers, and whities..  I usually jig larger spoons, or jigs 3/8 ounce and up, and I never really seems to have problems with the snap affecting the action of a spoon or jig..

If you were targeting panfish and and using a real light 1/16 or 1/8 ounce jig, I could definitely see the snap being an issue.

I have a few rods with different sized lures to vary my approach as the fish dictate what they want... Hate tying on new lures when dealing with a negative bite.

When I'm fishing walleye I have 6 rods setup different, bluegill 2 or 3 rods, whitefish 2 rods. On my walleye rods I have 1 or 2 rods with a snap for spoons/blade baits the other 4 have jigging raps tied on because I do not like to use a snap on those.

I use the little clips fly fisherman use to attach flies. They come in different sizes and are very rugged.

I have extra rods with different setups.

I've been fishing without a shelter lately, it makes changing setups in the cold much faster as I don't have to remove my gloves and have my fingers freeze.

If you are targeting panfish with a 1/8oz jig, the snap will not be your only issue!

I usually have 1/80 or 1/100 tied on, unless I'm fishing tungsten.

You get a slight different presentation with a snap vs a direct tie on.  So I always keep an open consideration.
