nils hand auger
« on: Nov 04, 2010, 05:16 AM »
I currently own an eskimo brand hand auger.  Have been considering a gas auger to be more efficient but I have always liked traveling light and start very early in the morning (the gas auger ticks off the natives here in MA).  I still am considering a power auger but have a couple of questions for everyong:

1.  How about a propane auger....are they quieter than gas?
2.  How about electric......is it quieter?
3.  I have seen the nils hand auger posts on this site....are they really that fast?

Thanks for your help!

Electric, super quiet and drills plenty fast. Hand drilling is hand drilling ......... it sucks in ice above 10".....period. I've done the hand, gas, and now the electric.

Well I just ordered the Nils 8 inch hand auger on Cabela's for $140 with free shipping.  I actually caught a youtube video of "skinnytrucker" comparing his new nils to his old eskimo and I was sold!  He cut 17 inches of ice in 31 seconds without even raising his heartrate!  Looks like a good auger and perfect for me because I fish so many ponds close to houses here in MA and I get on the lake at 4:00am some mornings!  The neighbors will appreciate me sticking with a hand auger!

Fishforpike. Have you had any trouble with your switches on your IceGator?

None.  Year two coming up.  I think the biggest issue (besides poor crimps from manufacture) is the tendency to "relax" pressure on the switch and have it stop and start under load.  I don't think those switches can take that kind of load too many times.
If you have had problems call them - they will send the new lever type to you.  I don't think I will mess with mine unless trouble starts.
