Hub ice shelter ?
« on: Oct 22, 2010, 08:08 PM »
i am thinking of getting one of clams hub shacks this year but have one question. do the hubs need to be tied down when the shack is up or is it ok if you just put screws in the holes in the skirt of the shack

I usualy just kick snow on top of the skirt to hold it in place on low wind days.
If the wind picks up I throw in the anchors and tie it down on the side the wind is blowing against.
If you cant ride it, drink it or bring home it to bed, it aint worth having!

I'll put a few screws in my Clam Command Post to help pull the base open to full width and put snow on the skirt to keep the breeze out.  If windy, for sure on the windward side you need to anchor before you pup up.  Wind gusts can also collapse the side so you may have to use the tie downs.

Definitely have to use tie downs if it is windy.  The windward side will collapse if you are in high winds.  The screws will hold down the shack, but the sides will still collapse in high winds unless you tie them down too.  I have the clam base camp thermal.  I love it, but it can be a pain in high winds.

What if we don't get much snow this winter?

The people that I have seen put up these pop up shelters, put the corner of their shanty into the wind.
After they anchor the shelter, they put snow on the skirt to hold it down.

IF there is no snow, they use a logging chain to hold the skirt to the ice.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

Use the tie downs!!!
You don't want to be that guy on U-Tube cahsing his shanty down the ice...

I saw it last season. A friend got the Eskimo quick fish and set it up to see how big the inside was. He walked away to check a flag and BOOM a gust of wind took it about 200 yards.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

Tying down the hubs is at least as important if not more important than the corners.
