Wheel house floor?
« on: Nov 18, 2010, 06:54 PM »
I just got done building a wheel house frame and need some help deciding how to make the floor. If I put a sheet of treated plywood on the bottom of the frame and on top, then insulated in between would that work, or would it just rot off from sitting on the ice and water. Thought maybe it would be nice to have a flat bottom (except for where the hole would be) so nothing would catch the frame for the steep landings. Thanks for the help in advance.

Most of the wheel houses that I've seen use Marine Grade (not just pressure treated) plywood on top of the frame, and commercial spray foam underneath, sometimes covered in rocker guard or bed liner. Apparently the spray foam stands up to the rocks and snow quite well, and does a great job of insulating. Good Luck.

I would put treated plywood on the bottom, then spray the entire bottom of your shack with spray on bedliner.

They have the kind that you can paint on, but I think the spray on stuff coats and sticks better.

This will help to water proof the bottom of your shack.

Spray on insulation on the inside and more plywood should complete the project very nicely.

Hope this helps,

1/8 inch aluminum might be another option.

Don't seal it up too good.  I have a travel trailer that was built with water proofing on the underside and linoleum on the top side.  Water got in under the linoleum and then could not evaporate out.  This rotted a section of the floor.  It should have some way to breath because no matter what you do some water will get in there.
