Why do all the new shacks get cheaper and cheaper
« on: Jun 09, 2010, 07:20 PM »
My rant on the newer shacks

I use to remember the old clam shacks that had the heavy duty canvas and the thick plastic tubs and now I remember looking around at the models at the stores last winter and they just keep getting crappier.

I wont even start with frabil there thin tent like material. it's not even cloth! yes I now they have some cloth like covers but still.

clams plastic seats without a cushion?? (clam pro)

Now lets start with the pack shack. lol lol lol lol ::) ::)

Is it just me or are they just getting cheaper, compared to the old models??

Not only do they want to have a model cheaper than the other companies, but they also want to make as much money as they can.  I met a guy last winter with the same model flip-over I had, only 4 years older.  His fabric was in better shape than mine, even with more use and equal maintenance.  People want to spend less, but that means they're going to get less unfortunately.

Yes and no, if you want a heavy duty shack that's gonna last, you're gonna have to pay for it.  Most guys can't seem to figure that out.  They are out there, they cost more than they used to though.  Inflation, and higher than ever demand drive prices up.  If you don't want to spend a lot of money, you get a cheap crap shack, that simple.

The mfg's are reserving the good quality stuff for premium prices.

Even though a LOT of people want quality and durability. The majority of first time buyers want lightweight and low prices. First time buyers really drive the manufacturers to build what are basically disposable crap for those low prices.

I have a Frabil solo & an older Frabil 2 man XLT twin with a bench seat for the wife & i .The solo has ALOT of fishing time on it in some very rough conditions & it was purchased the first year offered (now replaced with the Camando)it came with 4 windows back then, now the Camando only has three windows & on the Camando the tent has been rotated to the small side of the sled reducing fishing space.I just keep looking & saying to my self someday i am going to have to upgrade ,but Not today :-\.The Fabric on the XLT Twin is older & is the thickest woven Fabric i have run acrossed looking at all the new stuff .I guess nothing last forever & I will have to upgrade someday.I know i would never purchase any shack without sitting in it first as this is how i found out the Camando only has three windows in it.

Couldn't agree with ya more. I was in the market for a new shack last winter. I looked at all the new Clam models and some Frabills. Ended up buying an older Clam X2 and couldn't be happier. The poles are larger, the seats have more padding and of course the cost was a heck of a lot less. Don't know why people keep buying the new crap for $700 or more  ???

I think most peeps buy crap because they don't understand the value of a dollar, wages are too high and credit cards are like candy, nobody has to really save any more and want instant gratification......  jmho

Lets see here

Plastic sled- $60
poles-$15
cheap seats- $20
cloth- $30

I dont know why they ask $500 plus for some of those flip overs? ???

I happened to stop in my local tent rental store,(they make boat tarps, tents etc.) and told them of my no front door on my older clam flip over and for $30.00 I now have one. They said they can re-tarp any hut for a reasonable amount. So why buy new unless you realty need to? You can pick out how heavy of fabric you want. ( they had clam blue!) Check local yellow pages ;)
