8" mora through 16" in 16 minutes?
« on: Feb 24, 2010, 02:49 PM »
took me 16 minutes to get through 16 total inches of ice after having to chisel out the last 4 inches of it... so about 15 minutes to drill 12 inches. the auger has a hard time drilling downward after the first couple inches and just slides around on the ice mostly. It does ok when i chisel a small hole in the ice for the auger to follow but even doing that it takes me about 6 minutes to get through the ice. should i be expecting better performance out of the auger and if so how can i get it to perform better?

It shouldn't take more than 1 min ... your blades are dull.
How are the edges ?

??? ??? the first thing i would do is look at the blades and see where they were made. make sure they say Sweden. if not go to your local shop and buy those blades and in the seven inch. i cut holes with mine the other day through 14" with little trouble. the smaller hole is not really missed. I've pulled a couple smaller northern though my holes with no prob. I've also heard guys on here talking about making adjustments to the angle on the fighting. do a search to find that. but make sure the blades are from Sweden.

No offense, but why wouldn't dull blades be the first thing to cross your mind?
Unless you made some modifications to the auger, or replaced the blades recently and replaced them incorrectly, the first thought that would pop in my mind regarding difficulty in ANY auger cutting ice would be dull blades.

Kind of like when a drill or saw won't cut as easy as it had before.....you check the sharpness of the tool.

Then if that isn't the answer, you move on to other possibilities.

Good luck!

Yeh, Dull blades. I used to buy new blades every season on mine. They are expensive and don't last long. Baby the blades. I had an Eskimo hand Auger was almost as good as the Mora.

Then I tried a Laser 6" and the above became junk. Not even the same league. Trust me! Most people say the Nils is even better than the laser. trust me I know what you are talking about. I went through some hellacious workout to drill 10 holes in 7" ice with blades you would think are razor sharp.

Next year I am going to buy a 4.5" and an 8" Nils....and the Tanaka power head!
