vehicles on the ice
« on: Feb 16, 2010, 03:33 PM »
Are vehicles allowed on the ice anywhere in the adirondack park, or just snowmobiles and atv ? I was ice fishing in Maine a couple weeks ago, driving to the fishing spot was awesome.

it is as long as you stay on top of the ice if it goes through you pay a fine for polluting the water and have to pay for removal.

I've seen trucks out on Colby recently and some other lakes around here. I don't think you will ever see mine out there though.

I just learned last weekend that as soon as your vehicle leaves solid ground, your insurance coverage is gone. I didn't check into it, but heard it from a very reliable source. I won't drive out on less than 20" of black.

A friend of mine talked with his insurance company and they told him he was covered as long as he had comp and a 4x4.  Frozen lake is considered off road.  Again, thats what his company told him.

I fished in the Schroon Lake tournament a few years back when there was a ton of ice and the ice looked like a truck dealership.

Progressive told me that full coverage ins. would cover it. I routinely drive my full size Ram out on Black Lake when the Ice gets 24-30 inches. Theres not alot of parking where I go....like none, just those tire tracks disappearing out onto the ice..........DEC says 24 inches for full sized PU s but I just feel safer with 30" and cold temps.

Actually the DEC says you can put a full size P/U on 10inches and 25 tons on 20inches here is the link...

I dont care one way or another when people drive their vehicles on the ice, hey we are all out there because we are sportsmen and like to fish. What I do care about is my safety on the ice I have a family like everybody else that relies on me. When I was fishing a couple days ago and I wont say where but 2 full size trucks drove right up to my shanty because I was the only one on the lake and wanted to know how the fishing was. They were probably 20 yds away from me when they parked them and walked towards me. there is a good 12 inches of ice but I could feel them coming from a long ways away and I will be the first to admit I got a little nervous and let them know it. I wasnt rude about it but hey guys consider others before you drive a one ton truck on the ice and drive near others.

Many locals in Hamilton County drive out when ice conditions permit.  At least one a year goes through- it's not something that hits the papers and surely nothing to brag about.
All it takes is one time of a wheel going through and your foot is shaking so uncontrollably when you take it off the gas pedal your thinking about a whole lot of things (your kids actually fly by) and scared shishkabobless and then you review life and come up with the ice amount you require.  For me its no springs, inlets or outlets and 15" of black ice for the truck with my bloodline or friend in it.

How ironic a ad for progressive on the bottom of the page.
Sounds like experience HCNY.  The description you give of an exceptable lake doesn't fit many around these parts.
I've never had one out, don't see the need to. I have two good legs to get me where I need to.
For those that can't, there are better options to use than a 4000 lb vehicle.

I drive my Jeep Wrangler (1989 beater) on at least 10" of ice regularly and the 1ton SUV on at least 14" of black. Even with the wrangler only weighing about 3000 lbs stocked, you can feel the ice move, crack & boom under you as you drive. I never exceed 15 -20 MPH and usually just drive on the 2nd gear idle. I fish Schroon and Brandt a lot and see dozens of 1 ton trucks all over, many times parked 4-5 deep next to a shed. While down state I am much more cautious due to the warmer days. What drive me crazy (no pun intended) is the idiots that just drive down a boat launch and start doing donuts at 40+ MPH. They have no reason to be there and are too lucky for Darwin to take action. We all know that god looks after fools!

The most important thing is to know the lake, the inlets, outlets, springs, sunken islands, nautical markers, etc and above all where the bubblers that have become standard for the lazy, rich homeowners who do not want to bother with taking out their docks in the fall are. 20+ inches of solid black will disappear in a 30' span!
