May Lake Report

Two words -  got owned  :P

Actually, though the fishing was less than stellar I did really enjoy exploring that area.  Penner, you would be shocked at the fabulous road in.  We headed north on secondary 892.  Eventually you hit a fork in the road follow it East (right).  Keep following the extremely well plowed and busy road right to May Lake.  We go of the beaten track not realizing that this practical highway was built right to the lake.  Once we realized that our off roading was for naught and caught up to the main road it was both a relief and emabarassing all at the same time.

May Lake is small and beautiful.  Got to see a nice male moose, male deer and a lot of owls on the trip.  I loved the look of the lake but I am pretty luke warm to the fishing.   Only tracks were from earlier in the year but me and a my buddy made a ton on Saturday.  Tried everything on that lake including around the island, deep and shallow feeding flats, reeds, and off the steep drops.  Yielded generally small fish and nothing to get excited about.  About mid day the only other person that showed was a white truck watching us from the road.  I knew it was F&W and said to my buddy "As soon as we set up and go in the tent, watch him drive over."  He did as if on queue.   Nice elderly fellow, he checked our "stuff".  I had a good chat with him about May Lake.  He confirmed with me that the fishing was okay but better lakes in the area exist.

My mid afternoon we had enough and left and explored the great road to try and see if we could get to Marie.  We could.  Only one small 2 km section of offroading and we were back on another awesome oil road and made it to Marie in less than a half hour from May.  Stayed until dark to try and get a big burbot or two. Had one come in late...mammoth, mammoth burb.  I thumped the bottom and it came in on queue.  Lightly picked up my minnow, tasted and spat it out.... ???
Thumped again and got another response, same action, spat it out.  Maybe my buddy farted on the minnows when I wasn't looking  ???
Just one of those days where things didn't go my way.  Also lost a real nice pike at the bottom of hole in both lakes...sigh.  Still, a great day to explore and to be surprised by the amount of oil activity but still the great beauty of that area.

Cheers!
