were to take the family on LOW? never been thier
« on: Jan 15, 2010, 04:28 PM »
hello,
i would like to take my family to lake of the woods fishing in a week or to. the problem is i have no idea were to fish this monster. i have my wife and a 2 and 4 year old im taking. so i would really like to see my daughter(4yr old) catch some good fish, and will it be ok for us to take our own vehicle out thier? it's a 4wd envoy. im not asking for your super hotspots(but you could tell me ;D). just somewhere we can get a good mess of fish and photo's for our album.

i do have my H2O-c with me so gps coordinates will work too.

thanks,
peter

Ok i can try to point you in the rite area .. Get a lake of the woods map you will want to fish about 5-6 miles north of pine island in 30-32 feet of water then move in closer to shore as the day goes on.

just got back tonight from low.  We stayed in one of Zippel Bay Resorts sleepers and fished Monday and Tuesday.  When are you planning on going?  The fishing was ok.  There were 5 of us and caught 40 on monday with the biggest being 21''  and cleaned 8 or so around 15''.  Tuesday was slower but bigger fish.  I caught a 26'' walleye which made it worth the 8hr drive.  Ive only been there 4 times, but good service and fishing every time.  If your fishing out of portables the other info you got sounds good.  Im not sure where pine island is, but we were in about 30' of water as well.  If you want to stay at a resort they have nice log cabins you can rent that come with ice houses and are pretty reasonable.  I had one resevred for Feb. of this year, but a friend of mine called and said go now if you can so we did and all that was available was a sleeper. Good Luck!

would you be fishing in a portable or would you be renting a permanent.  If you are fishing in a portable, zippel bay or morris point are both good.  If you are looking towards renting, you cant go wrong with sportsmans lodge or arnesens.  hope this helps.

you are taking a portable.  Morris point and zippel bay are good because they plow ice roads onto the lake and all you have to pay for is a ice pass which is usually $8-10.  usually the guys at the resort or the local bait shop or will tell you how deep to fish based on reports of other fisherman.  Those are the only resorts I know that plow ice roads.  there might be more but I am not sure.  also, you will probably need an auger extension because the ice gets so thick.

Arneson's Rocky point does NOT plow roads. They take their customers out in bombers...keeps  the traffic down. Lots of options near the Rainey River/pine island area, also a lot of traffic there. I have gone farther west to Long Point and Zippel Bay resorts, for less traffic. They both plow and maintain roads on the lake, and you take your own vehicle out. Not sure where you are staying, but could make a difference where you should go out of. LOTW has lots of small (9-11") saugers, for good action for the kids. Larger fish will be mixed in over the day.  Have fun.
