Creepers
« on: Jan 25, 2010, 04:22 PM »
Has anybody tried the Kahtoola MICROspikes?
http://www.fish307.com/kahtoolamicrospikes.aspx
I just bought a pair and wondered how everyone else likes them.  The price is a little on the ouch factor, but hopefully money well spent.  Looks like I may need them in a few days.

I bought these to replace my HT Stabilicers, since the straps broke, hex-head studs keep pulling out, the plastic ring under the front strap broke as well, and the velcro doesn't hold anymore and then they fall off!  So I'm done with the $30 worthless stabilicers ...

How much is too much when it means that you might slip and fall , crack your head open or break something else ? I think creepers should be  one the first thing you buy over and above what it takes to fish .
I have those creepers that fit in the arch of your boot with the lime green shock cord for the heel and one for the instep... Great when they stay put...  >:( I actually saw a guy on Sandy Pond with Mountain Climber Crampons on !!    :o

They'll work great................. ...until you get some snow on the ice then they'll load up like other low profile creepers and on your butt you'll go  !     Fresh snow on glare ice is even worse than glare ice as it gives you a false sense of security and when you least expect it, your feet are facing the sky.

Get some Arctic Spurs and fugeddaboutit !     Deep spikes, easy on/off, they penetrate the snow and don't load up and they cost $12.00 a pair at Gander !
PLASTICS ARE FANTASTIC  !!

I prefer Korkers. I've had the same pair for about 15 years. Still are in great shape ;) Had to have one of the strapes stiching fixed but thats just wear and tear.

Arctic Spurs are horrible ... those have got to be the worst creepers I've ever put on my feet.  Having spike under the arch of your feet is not a good idea, and quite painful too.

Yes I have them and so far so good the hold the the ice well and are light compared to my Korkers  .The only problem I see so far is that when I put these on size 13 Baffin Magellans they are at the limit of stretch I would not use more than 13  I emailed the company and asked if the would make them bigger or add a link of chain but they said they have no plan to increase the size but they are worth the money for me

The thing I've found that works better than all that stuff on the market is grab yourself some little self tappers(sheet metal screws) then screw them into the bottom of your boots! The size you use is up to you I use 3/8 inch! They work AWESOME!!! I've tried all sorts of creepers and will never waste my money again!!!

CrappieAssasin42- I'm not about to ruin my $175 boots by putting sheet metal screws in them.  Glad they work for you, but not for me.

Chickenfoot- ... man those are some big'ol boots!  I was hoping they would be a huge improvement from my HT Stabilicers, which worked really good for 4 or 5 seasons, but have just worn out and needed replacing.  I've tried just about everything else, from Arctic spurs to Yaktrax Pros.  The Yaktrax loaded up with ice and snow, and the Artic spurs felt like some sort of midevil torture devise.  Guess I'll have to give them a go and find out for myself.

Sullymon, they didnt ruin my $250 boots so I couldnt see how it would ruin your bud! they are only bout 1/2 long so they wont make your boots leak or anything! at first I was hesitant but my buddy reassured me that they didnt ruin his boots cause I felt the same way you do about stickin bolts in the bottom of my brand new Rockies! but it works! I take them out in the off season and put them in when theres ice!

Like I said, great that they work for you ... but they are not for me.  I like to be able to take them off easily when walking on my driveway and so on ... not about to buy a second pair of boots at $175 either.

I ALREADY BOUGHT THEM ... I just wanted someones input who has a set of MICROspikes.  So therefore I'm not looking for other alternatives, just a review of the product with likes/dislikes and so on.  The $60 I spent on them has already been justified.

I bought the Kahtoola MICROspikes from 307 about a month ago and they work GREAT.  I have no complaints.  If there is a little snow on the ice and you step in water and then snow obviously some will stick but it comes right off.  IMO they are great creepers, a little pricey yes, but after I took a couple spills back in december due to a thin layer of snow on glare ice bc my other HT creepers were junk, its money well spent.  You will have no complaints.  I am tough on my gear and these seem to hold up.

thought this over pretty good and decided i wouldnt do it to my boots either. Reason being If you take them out in the off season and then put them back in. 1 eventually your going to need a larger diameter screw. And 2 what happens when the tread on the boot starts to wear and when you put that screw back in its goes a bit further in then expected? Just some thoughts

Good point Jeff! But I'm goin on my 2nd year and so far so good! See these are my ice fishin boots so I keep mine in all year long but I could see your concern on them wearing out the whole and needing thicker bolts!

Actually now that you mention it, the Stabilicers I've been using have another major flaw ... the studs pull out constantly.  I could see how the same thing would happen to boots with studs screwed in.  It has been my experience that screws just don't like to stay put in a rubber sole ... maybe a truck tire or sled track.

Yeah the Stabilicers I've been using have Vibram soles and the studs pull out constantly.  Tried Gorilla Glue and marine silicone but they still pull out.  Anywhoooooooo ... thaks for the input, gonna try the new MICROspikes tomorrow (I think).  I will give a review ....

I have them, they grip like crazy, you won't end up on your rear. Two observations-they hurt my legs a little because there is absolutely no give and they are noisier than some other, less substantial types/models. Size 12 muck boots, good fit with the XL.

The Microspikes are great. I use these on the ice and in the mountains hiking when the bigger crampons are to much.

Yup, bought the Microspikes at fish307 this year.  So far, they work great.  They should for how much they cost.

Went out today on Saratoga and it was very slick.  I went about five steps without the creepers and was sliding everywhere, put them on and didn't even think twice about falling..very sure footing.
