« on: Jan 21, 2010, 09:05 AM »
Hey guys im looking to make my first trip there this year and was wondering how the fishing has been? Beings though its my first time im up for any tips, we plan on targetting perch and smelt. I dont plan on you guys telling me your hot spots and what not because i am going to do my home work and research on my own but like i said im up for any tips you are willing to provide. This is a very helpful site and im sure that someone will be willing to get me to a starting point anyway. Thanks in advance and keep the lines tight!

Don't worry about hot spots just look for a group of people and you have found the hotset location. A good area to access thw lake is from the DNR boat launch on the west side, plenty of parking (you pay for the day). Haven't been up myself yet this year but close to going. They have been getting a few smelt stright out fron the west launch in 40FOW to 80FOW and that is only about 50 to 60 yeards from shore. Haven't heard how the perch are doing, but again look for the croud. :icefish:

perch have been all on the small side. Smelt are hitting well from 8 pm til around 10. I've tried 3 locations and they have all produced.

mbrooks is right...perch are very small this year... I would rather catch smelt, whitefish, and lakers, then spend all weekend searching for the school of jumbo's.                good luck
"Oh honey don't worry ice fishing season is almost over"     Oh Yeah, then we got steelhead, then bass, then big lake salmon, then fall river salmon........etc.

Last 2 outings have been REALLY slow for the smelt. They were stacked up below me but would not hit anything I threw at em. I hope the bite turns back on after this rain, I'm running out of bait.
