towing a flip over shack/sled with a 4 wheeler
« on: Jan 03, 2012, 12:26 PM »
I noticed on the box when I put it on that it said reciever not included. I didn't pay much attention to that untill I put it on my sled and wanted to match it up to the 4 wheeler and found out something is missing. The 4 wheeler has a small reciever where I could put a hitch mount but the hole is like 3/4 of an inch so it is kinda small. All the other hitches I see are 1 1/4 inch hitches. It would flop around and be sloppy but I guess might work. What kind of hitch do you guys use to drag your sleds out with a tow bar. Thanks guys

My atv has a 2" receiver in it, but I just put a ball adapter in there with no ball and use a pin through the sled towbar and the open hole the ball woulda been in. Hopefully that makes sense. Mines an Eskimo settup, if the attachment methods are different, I dunno...

mine looks like this

Not enough ice or time... not necessarily in that order.

thats the same style tow bar i have but mine is made by clam. I was thinking about  using a ball mount hitch and not putting a ball on it. Ill have to get one and try to slide the hitch over the reciever and see if i can get it to work or if i am gonna have to get something different.

Dewey - I have the same setup and it works fine removing the ball and using a pin

Remove the ball and use the pin works fine for me as well.  I have the Clam hitch for the Yukon and I made brackets that match up for my Kenai so I can use the same tow bar for both sleds.

Where's the best place to buy the attachment that connects the sled to the wheeler?

I did an internet search for it using google shopping since mine was not available locally... you can filter the results by price and check availability in your area (if it works)...

Most snowmobile suppliers should be able to get that without any problem.

I'm cheap. I made one  ;). Had someone weld the two plates for me, them trimmed with a die grinder and drilled for the "U" bolts. I used heat shrink on the stainless "U" bolts and two strips of drilled rubber as backers to try to keep the paint from getting worn.

I ended up getting a 3/4" hitch from the polaris shop for 26 dollars. looks like a ball mount hitch for the truck but without the ball like stated above.

Nocod and hick have the right setups. You are going to want the hitch to pivot up and down as well as side to side. One lake that we fish pretty frequently has quite a steep bank to get on and off the lake. Before i installed the tow hitch setup my tow hitch BENT so bad we had to get a few of us to lift the back of the quad to remove the pin. Boy was that a B!#*ch. then to make matters worst try bending metal out in the middle of a lake with no tools so you can hook up and go home.I know what most of you may be thinking ??? why didn't he just take the pins out of the sled side of the hitch ::) Well they were so frozen from snow and ice i was scared to break the plastic mounting areas of the sled. My ice scoop has a pretty good chipper on it and metal to metal to metal chip away ;D Now I have an eskimo chipper/hammer in my ice arsenal ::)

I bolted two hinges together, then drilled holes for a U bolt to fit through and mounted it to the bumper on my sled. Has up and down movement, and a pin can be installed in one of the holes.
