Starting A New Tank

Hey guys, I'll be starting my first ever bait tank this weekend and just wanna make sure I do it right.
I've got a 55 gallon plastic barrel that I will be laying on its side. It will be in my garage that is slightly heated so freezing isn't an issue.
I'm looking at buying an Aqua Clear Power Filter in the 30-70 gallon size. Will this filter be good enough for what I want?
Also how many minnows would you be able to keep in this size of tank. I don't wanna overload it and lose them. It will mostly be small and medium sized mud minnows.
Lots of great info on this site and I'm slowly making my way through it and getting pointers.

I am no expert but I have the same set up as you and I have had 18-20 dozen shiners in mine for 3-4 weeks with no die off. I do have 2 air stones and I change 10% of the water weekly.

I started my tank almost 2 weeks ago now, and it seems to be working very well. As of right now there are about 70 or so muds in it.  I'm also running more than one stone and the only dead ones I've had are the suicide jockeys that jumped out and 2 that got stuck behind the intake for the filter.

Same system I am running and have had up to 16 dozen or so in there since November, have not had any die off, but my numbers are going down recently.....Hey I'm finally fishing on ice again!
