pike/bluegill
« on: Feb 21, 2010, 11:55 PM »
so to the pike fishermen with much more experience than me, if your jigging for bluegills and bam they stop bitting, does anyone swith to maybe a pike bait/jig/spoon and have good results, what im wondering is if alot of times the bite shuts off because a pike comes into the area, anyone that fishes with caremas? thinking that im going to try having a heavy rod set up and waiting and then when the bite stops ill drop that in. thanks

i used to do it all the time in the 1000 islands. be jiggin away slammin perch an gills and all of a sudden they dissapear and a gator comes slithering in. well i got smart to that trick and id hook a small gill or perch on a tip up and when they would show up drop it down real quick and WHAM!! another thing you could do is just set a tip up just outside your hut or right next to you if you dont have a hut. ive tried the heavy rod w/ a rapala deal but the live bait seems to produce better. Good luck!!

i notice recently after i would catch a small pike and through it back, the big gills would start bitting.

We've been getting pike to hit small panfish jigs like crazy this year,I caught a 35 incher(10 lb 6 oz) on a 24 Ul St. Croix rod and 3lb test, and had several smaller fish hit them,I don't switch to spoons, because I'm jigging for Gills and Crappie, but most time have 2-4 tip-ups on the edge of the weed beds, set for pike. I do know that the panfish shout down when we hook a pike, sometimes for at least an hour.

Catch a small gill and add it to a tip up or deadstick rod if legal, works great for pike and walleye. Perch are another fine bait.

pike prefer trout over bluegills!

That's because pike prefer big, stinking, oily bait.

A trout fits that description nicely.  (At least the stinking and oily part)

Last year pike kept swimming by my camera wile i was jigging so i drilled a hole right outside my shanty and put in a tip-up and sure enough i popped my head out the door and the flag was up. I do that every time i go out now when ever pike swim by the camera.

I was doing this exact thing yesterday, jigging for gills and the screen clears... then this guys swims in... as you can see I did not have anything else rigged, so tried to temp him with my gill jig

I usually have a spoon and minnow at the ready to drop when the screen clears or when I see a pike move in

Well from my experience i do alot of spearing for pike my hole in 24x48 hole i could be watching gill perch in the hole than boom there gone. Some times it a pike or bass. And i have had days were pike or bass come in and the gill/perch don't move. Hope this helps.
