A darter grand slam
« on: Jan 05, 2010, 03:16 PM »
The dog and I hit one of the coves for a few hours before work this morning. It was a great sunrise, not too cold and for a change no wind to speak of.

I set up 5 flags with big baits for pike and spent the rest of the morning jigging. I never had a flag but the jigging was decent. All I used was a Lindy Darter... I caught perch bass and crappie. I had a ball teasing the fish up with the Humminbird. The bass was the most work, I could tell it was a bigger fish before she hit. She would keep fading in and out on the flasher but every once in a while she was bright red on the screen. I'm guessing she was close to 3 pounds or so. It was a blast on 4lb test. Every once in a while, I run across a bass with funky black patterns on it. This one was one of the more interesting I've seen...

The perch were invisible on the flasher but would just materialize right out of the bottom. They were hungry today.

I had a few crappie as well... That's where the Humminbird really came in handy. Jigging in 17-20 feet I was finding a few about 5 feet off the bottom. They were a bit more finicky than the perch but still fun.

My neighbor works for the inland fisheries in the DEP, he said it is a hamless parasite and is very common in CT...

Blaine, how do you like your Humminbird? I'm looking to get a flasher, so just looking for a little feedback on that unit.

  Thanks.

Well... As long as I've been ice ishing, this is my first flasher so I really have nothing to compare it to. I did a bit of research before I bought it. It had everything I was looking for. I don't ever fish deep water so I didn't need the power of the 55. I've looked at some of my friends older Vexilars and the image on mine is much sharper but you'd expect that from a unit these days. It's also a lot quieter than the others I"ve fished around. I find it very easy to use, the gain and zoom are idiot proof. The only thing I'd change is to be able to dial down the brightnes at night... So far, I love it!
