Wheatland area?
« on: Dec 07, 2009, 09:16 AM »
Has anyone been up to Toltec or any other lakes in the area. I am going to try and do some ice fishing right around Christmas. I am going to head to East Kennedy’s Res. It isn't as far up the hill but usually about the same ice conditions. Any reports would be great. Thanks

I heard they put alot of water into Wheatland #3 this year and the water level is back up to the boat ramp.  Hope this is true as this use to be a great fishery, ecspecially for ice fishing.

We fished Totec two weeks ago. At that time there was a good five inches of ice. The water is up, so there is more lake to fish. The fishing was a little slow but we did manage to catch an 18" brookie and a few smaller bows. We had three nice bows roll through; one threw the hook and another one snapped me off.
I've never fished East Kennedy. If you would, pm me and give me a few details. It would be much appreciated.

I don't know whether the water is to the boat ramp or not, but we could see water from the fetterman road. I haven't seen that in a couple of years. A call to the WGF is in order. I know that there were no fish in it last year but my bet is they have restocked it.

Are we sure were talking about Wheatland #3? I think you're talking about Wheatland #1, a whole different ballgame.

Crazy, watch the ice on Grayrocks! Of all the lakes in the area I trust it the least. I've seen springs in the middle of the lake that keep the ice a bit thin in spots. It also seems to like to thaw refreeze thaw refreeze making it a bit spooky to me.
What about #1 or Rock Lake, anyone ever do any good on them through the ice? Any tips?

I just drilled a few holes at grayrocks today. south side, near the boat ramp has almost 6 inches and the north east side has almost 5 inches. I walked out about 50 feet and drilled. I was just driving by so i did not fish, however, I will be out there tomorrow around 10am.

we were bombarded with wind and my shack took some light wind damage, we fished from noon - 4:30 without a single bite. i think i would have done better if i was by the dam, I'm gonna try again this week.

Fished Rock Lake yesterday. Ice is 5-6 inches except in a few spots on the lake the wind must have opened up. I don't think I would venture out if the lake is covered by snow cause you won't be able to see these spots.  Good news is I caught 12 inches of perch, bad news it took three of them to make that 12 inches.... :-\  Was a slow bite but at least we weren't buffeted by the infamous Wheatland wind. All in all, a good day...better than working..  ;D
