How far south
« on: Jan 18, 2010, 05:02 PM »
I am new to ice fishing. I was wondering how far south in Indiana do y'all fish on the ice. I live near Lafayette in boiler country. A few times a summer I head south and fish a pond near Scottsburg. You can catch 10" to 11" gills all day long. I don't know how many people in that area fish on the ice. All the posts I read are Indy and north. I am sure it freezes over, but how deep and how often?

Fish as far south as linton on the strip pits. Had as much as 7 inches but as of sunday they were losing it fast. A few cold nights would tighten that area up fast. Fishing was very good for us this weekend. Good luck and be careful.

Have you ever tried the fairfield ponds? I have caught some nice bass out of the one just east of the road, but I have never tried it through the ice.

I live in the Terre Haute area and we had 7 inches10 days ago. was out Saturday and it was down to 4 inches  with some slope on top. Over the past 3 years i have been going to the Danville Illinois area fishing and it seems that interstate 74 is a big dividing line. yesterday i fished 25 miles south of I74 on 4 different bodies of water that all had 4 to 5 inches of ice. Today i was  10 miles north of I74 and there was 8 inches of ice.

I have never fished fairfield. I have a buddy that fished it through the ice a week ago. I'm not sure how he did.

I have never fished fairfield. I have a buddy that fished it through the ice a week ago. I'm not sure how he did.

Be careful on the Fairfield pits, they are deep.  I ice fished it back in 2000 and 2001 when I was still at Purdue.  Four or five feet off the shore you are at 15 fow in some of the lakes.  I went there before there was snow on the ice and you can definately see a color difference in the ice over the deep water.

We fished the pits at least once a week in the spring and caught a ton of fish, however, the few times I went ice fishing there I didn't catch anything, probably because the fish were in the deep deep water, which I wasn't going to fish over due to the look of the ice.  In the spring the small pit always produced a lot of crappie, gills, bass, and a few catfish.

I know this doesn't help for ice fishing, but here are a couple spots to try in the spring.  We caught a lot of crappie fishing the drop off in the area where I put a yellow X, some days we would catch 70 plus fish in a few hours, minnow under slip bobber slowly jigging it back in.  The area with the blue X was good during the spawn for bluegill.

There are a lot of monster bass in these pits.

The water is usually very clear so the fish are easily spooked, so it would be best to stand a few feet back from the shore.

Real fisherman don't yield to the weather.
