Older Jiffy Oil/Fuel ratio
« on: Dec 02, 2009, 02:22 AM »
Hello everyone.  I just bought a 6 year old (so the guy told me) Jiffy White Lightning with a 2 HP engine.  There are no stickers saying the ratio, so would it be 24:1 or 40:1?  Thank you.

Best thing to do would be to just go synthetic, Amsoil or Opti 2 which is meant for all 2 strokes at 100:1.  Most guys including myself go 80:1, or somewhere close to that just for some extra insurance.

Hi...

For that engine, a 40-1 ratio is fine.  Do not use a synthetic with a higher ratio.  Tecumseh put a hold on synthetics a few years back.  Personally, it is my oil choice.  However it is best to use Jiffy's oil or equivilant.

Have a great Jiffy Season!

My 23 year old Model 30 calls for 24:1 mix. I've been running Opti-2 at 100:1 for 4 years without a problem. Also use it in 2 Husky chain saws, a Homelite saw, and my weed eater

I agree with Double Shooter, I simply have to post the company line.....meaning Tecumseh.

Well I'll probably run Jiffy at 40:1 for now but I wouldn't mind trying synthetic out...read a lot of good things about it.  Thanks for the replies.

I still use any 2-stroke oil that is TCWIII rated (mostly Texaco and Havoline) and I run it at 48:1  That's 1 pint to 6 gallons for ALL my toys and tools. Been mixing that was since the 80's or longer.

I don't think I've ever fouled a plug except once on my old snowmobile and I'm not sure why it did. I don't even have spare plugs for my auger, chain saw, weed whacker nor outboards x 3. Same plug(s) year after year, I don't even pull them out to clean them.

Granted, I may not use the pi$$ out of them. day-in and day-out as some die-hards would but I also don't see a need to change anything that ain't broke either.

I began working on vehicles over 30 years ago and one thing I think is a waste, is changing plugs every time you turn around just because someone says to. If your plug is fouled or almost fouled, fix the problem and stop feeding landfills with your dead plugs. If it's running right, the plug should last until the electrode wears down. Besides, the more you change them, the more chances you'll strip the threads, especially in aluminum heads. If there's points involved, I want them perfect preferably with a timing light. Good spark = long plug life and easy starting.

And yeah, I have some Helicoils waiting for just that day, but no spare plugs....  :P

I've never tried synthetic so I can't knock what works for others. Someday  ;)

I spoke to the Amsoil rep at the St. Paul ice show on Friday.
He said that any of the 2 stroke oils made by Amsoil are ok at 50:1

He said that Saber is made specifically for Augers and can be run at 100:1

I use the outboard injector oil by Amsoil, (which can be used as a premix) at 50:1

The rep said it is fine, as long as it is an oil for 2 strokes, and not an oil that you would use in a 4 stroke engine.
He said that the 4 stroke oil is not made to be mixed with gas, but the 2 stroke oil is.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
