Ice Grips
« on: Nov 10, 2009, 04:57 AM »
Asking for advice on Ice grippers for boots, I have a pair of FIRST ICE, they are two years old and the heads of the 1/4 bolt heads have worn off. I will be lay ed off work for the winter, really not bad for me, bad for the fish. I will have plenty of time time to walk on the water,as there are many lakes in northwest Indiana,
I would appreciate some advice.

there are a few pairs on the market that I see most guys wearing,

Stabilicers and YaxTrax seem to be two popular brands here. I use YaxTrax myself

Put some new screw in the old ones. Or right into the boots.

CohoBob,
Welcome to Ice Shanty. Besides the Stabilicers I suggest Ice Spiders used this style of creeper for years.I purchased mine from Cabelas had not seen them listed in Cabelas catalog for a few years and thought maybe Ice Spiders were no longer being manufactured. When I purchased this years (2010) copy of the IN-Fisherman Ice Guide they have a picture and brief description of Ice Spiders in a article on new ice fishing gear. I will post a hyperlink to the website for Ice Spiders below.
One Suggestion to you and others if possible bring the boots you will wear ice fishing with you to the store and try on creepers. If this is not possible trace the outline of one boot onto a piece of paper and send it with your order. I'm currently using Stabilicers bought new PAC boots in 2007 and my Ice Spiders would not fit onto the boots.
Either way (Stabilicers-Ice Spiders ) are good set of creepers easy to put on and remove, hope this post is of some help to you.

I just tried the hyperlink it works but when I tried to get to the merchandise section of the website I was not able to access the page. You may have to use the contact us feature to get info. on the Ice Spiders.

I would get these if they weren't so expensive($59.00). They are like the Cabela's boot chains ($14.99) but with spikes added to them. I bought the boot chains last year and they are ok but when you start hand drilling a hole, you start to slide around on the ice. The spikes in these would be really helpful.

These were in the In-Fisherman 2010 Ice Guide

I use some crampons.  Grivel G10  just a little over one ben franklin on sale.

If you ever have to pull a sled up or down hill...It's so much easier with something that gives you real good traction.  They are a little small for anyone who will wear a size 12 boot or bigger.  I'm ordering the extender bars to see if now I can hook up my pac boots.

If you have boots specifically for ice fishing like I do, that you put on at the lake, then I think there is nothing better than putting 1/4" stove bolts directly into the lugs of the boots. They are strong, replaceable and can be placed where you want or deem necessary after walking on ice for a while.
