New World Record Musky?
« on: Feb 18, 2009, 06:39 PM »
On November 28, 2008, Ottawa native Dale McNair caught and released a musky on the St. Lawrence river which totaled in at a whopping 57", and a 33" girth. Muskies, Inc. formula for calculating the weight of a musky, which is length x girth x girth divided by 800. Using this formula the fish would weigh over 77 pounds and easily be a world record.

I was thinking that a new world record class fish would be coming from either the St. Lawrence or the Georgian Bay. What do you guys think of this?

I think if I caught a Musky that big there would be no question as to its legitimacy.

Why?

Because I'd be dragging that fish on the back of my sled, holding a beer-with an ear to ear smile and screaming 'whoooooooo'at the top of my lungs.

Whats the rest of the story? Why didn't they keep it, no pictures to prove all the measurements, no offical weight, or even a "It maxed out my 50 lb Rapala scale"?  I always practice c&r, but a fish that big... come one.

oh yeah pics are easy to find. just google "dale mcnair musky"..the fish was caught there is no doubt about it..hes touring the US right now doing seminars and what not. The thing people are debating is weither or not you think it'd be a world record musky..and that its a shame that it isnt official because it clearly is a record.

wierd. cause i read multiple articles saying it would be 77. not to mention i personaly did the calculations with the length and girth on two different website's methods and they were within ounces.

I read that this guy is 5'11'', 300lbs. and it looks big in his arms! I live a little more than 30mins. from the st. lawrence and I never fish it  :cookoo: I'm hooked on big lake ontario 'eyes, but that is simply incredible. Better yet, she's still out there swimmin' :woot:

true that! its hard to be a successful musky fisherman on the st. lawrence cause its such a big river..you really have to know it well. I mainly target the Grasse river but will be doing much more st. lawrence river musky fishing this year. the ice fishing on the STL has been good though

The problem with the various methods is there are too many variables to always get an accurate weight just by the weight and girth.

Theres no doubt in my eyes that fish hit 60# but 70#+ might be pushing it...but then again I've never seen a fish of that class up close so who knows for sure...certainly nice to know she was released to spawn and pass on her genes  ;D ;D

Lol how do you figure 70 is pushing it though? 3 of 5 methods stated 70+ and the other two were mid to high 60's. I don't know if you guys have read any articles but i read it in the Musky Hunter magazine and there was a whole page on this fish. But like you said, few people have seen fish in such a size class so its really just a shot in the dark for us to guess the weight.
