Manual ice drill to power earth auger?
« on: Feb 22, 2009, 05:13 AM »
I have a Strikemaster Mora hand auger and was wondering if anyone has ever tried to connect the drill portion to a power auger head such as the one pictured in the link below:http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100036583

Any info would be great. Thanks.

well first off how much does the power head cost? if it is relatively expensive just get an old jiffy... yes you can probably make a adaptor for it but i woudl only use a 6 inch cuz other wise it will strees out your welds and break and go down the hole like mine did :-[

my dad did the same thing a few years back, he had an adapter made that mates up to the powerhead shaft and then to the auger bit, and like brokenline said, keep it short otherwise ya gonna snap the adapter.
dont take life too seriously, you'll never get out of it alive                                            team broke azz

Hey Rickster, I was in fish 307 friday and asked Jeff the same question about mine. I have Baberacuda that cuts well but it's slow with the 8" auger. I want to put on 6" nills blade. They are much faster, though not quite as rugged' for jiggin. They have designed an adapter just for that and had some made  up. They have them in stock behind the counter. Might work for ya??? Good luck and good fishin to all!!!! :)

I did just that with the same set up, the power head will wreck your hand auger do to the power, twist the flighting then I ended up with nothing. My lesson learned, they sell a Ice auger for the earthquake that turns clockwise, the others turn counterclock wise. Works great little slower than a normal ice auger because of the gear reduction, but can use year around. Just my 2cents Static.

I made an adapter to connect my 6" mora to a stihl power head, made it out of a couple pieces of pipe and a reducer with a couple of pins holding it together, worked great, never had a problem. I used it 2 seasons till I got a used laser 10" and I miss it, very light and I would say it had a little more torque being an earth auger. 3/4" pipe nipple to 3/4 x 1/2" reducer to 1/2" pipe nipple, drill holes for pins.
