Aye friends, I know there is no ice in this article, and there is no ice in my local right now so I thought you would all bust a gut laughing at this one. This new zealand fisherman got bored after catching 1,100 marlin in the conventional way so he, ah, ya, well - well here is a few lines from the story on the Today show interview with Matt Lauer...

If the phrase “extreme fishing” sounds fishy to you, it’s only because you haven’t met Matt Watson — a man who brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “Don’t try this at home.”

After landing 1,100 marlin in his life by conventional methods, the New Zealander decided there must be a more exciting way to catch a fish that can grow to nearly a ton and sports a lethal spear on its nose. Thursday, he gave TODAY’s Matt Lauer a look at what he came up with.

His footage revealed Watson diving from a helicopter onto the back of a cruising marlin in the Pacific Ocean. Another camera underwater caught him wrestling the giant fish to the surface before finally letting it go.

yeah i'm not impressed  also i'v proably caught over 1100 fish and the excitment never goes away weather its pike lakers or perch nothing is better than that feel of a fish pulling on the end of my line

guys a silly freak tryin to make money!!! The way he tells it sounds like they probably just released the fish from the boat that was filming and he jumped on it :tipup:

The best part is he says he gets his ideas from him and his mates sitting in the pub tipping a few back. Anyone who survived their late teens can tell ya nothing fruitful ever came out of plans made with drinking buddies, especially when it involved jumping out of something moving! :woot: I don't care if it was a shopping carriage, someone was going to spend some time in the land of hurt.

I think where he really goes wrong is making a tv show about it and publicizing it - he's going to ruin it for the rest of us with helicopters and case of bud light ! ;D

I think at the next gathering we should tip a few (like you weren't going to anyway) and pencil down some ideas to mail him.

Burpppp... I've got one... How about dress him up in seal suit and troll him behind a jet ski at 3 knots across the north African coastline where those great whites go airborn ?

what a bunch of BS! ill betcha they poisoned it or something! no way that fish would have hung out while a freakin chopper was buzzin over! i see hawks and eagles cruisin over salmon streams and lakes and the salt here and the fish disappear the moment they see the shadow or movement....i hope he tries that with a shark and gets chomped....

Not only would the fish have spooked from the helicopter, but how about the diver filming the underwater footage?  The fish was likely drugged, or somehow incapacitated.  I have caught fish like this one in Mexico.  The fight is something I will never forget.  I will say that a 80lb tuna puts on a better fight than any of the marlin I have caught.  My best fight was still a 57" sturgeon on 8lb mono.
