Fatty little Oxbow pike
« on: Feb 18, 2009, 02:06 PM »
went out for pike today at the oxbow, put out 8 out of ten tipups with real big bait and then put the other two out with tiny bait to try and catch some perch for pike bait, and just as luck would have it the only flag that goes up all day is one of the tiny shiner tip ups, but it wasnt a perch, but the pike I was looking for.  25.5" and really fat, looks like the perch were already in its belly.  It was also covered with these little black spots on its skin and fins too, seemed healthy and didnt seem to have any apetite issues,  I feel like I may have seen this before on other fish, anybody know what this stuff is?

bad picture I know, just wanted to show the close up of those skin spots.

The easiest way is to take Exit 18 off of 91, take a right onto rt. 5, take the 2nd right onto island Rd., take island all the way to the end, you will be at the oxbow marina, park there, and go fishing!

It's probably "black spot" a mark left by a parasitic worm that is harmless to humans. Most people just cut off the skin anyway.

We caught a pike in one of our lakes with the same type spots even more judging by your pics. we were thinking parasites. Not all of them have em just this one that we caught.

That is what I think. Here in maine you will find pickerel absolutely covered in black spot. It is a harmless parasite.
