Just got a new Ice fishing toy.
« on: Feb 21, 2009, 09:05 PM »
Well I broke down and bought a fish finder.  I was going to get a Vexlar but opted for this one, I may regret it but who knows.

You won't reget it. stick it on the boat in the summer and just like it is in the winter. Just take the time to understand reading it.

Nice purchase VTGoose.  Besides having the piece of mind that, they may not be biting, but at least they're down there, there's another perk too.  I was jigging on the bottom in 80 f.o.w. today, when a thick black line showed up at 20'.  I reeled up quick, gave it a jig, and hooked what would have been my biggest laker yet.  It swam right beneath the hole a couple times before throwing the hook.  Those present estimated it could have pushed 10 lbs.  A couple of lessons can be learned from this: sharpen your hooks, set 'em hard, and use sonar.  Good investment.

Just adjust the sensetivity till you just see your jig and any other line on the screen is a fish.

What part of VT are you from?  Thats a great story about the fish, too bad you didn't land him.

You will love it. Fishing will never be the same. I advise to get it off the Auto mode ond on to Manual mode. Learn how to fine tune it and to read what it's telling you. Your catch rate will increase as well as your frustration level. Good Luck.

You wont regret it I have the hummingbird 343, scroll through your your veiw button and if its like mine you will also have a flasher to. I dont use it I prefer the graph. Just turn your fish id off, you will have to turn your sensitivity up to allmost max when fishing in deep water to see your jig. Mine has the color graph does yours? If you need any pointers pm me.

Thank you to all.  Sounds like the first thing I need to do is take it off Auto mode and start tuning it.  More than likely I wont hit over 65 FOW but who knows where the fish will lead me, now that I can see where they're going.

What species do you target VT? with 2000 wats of power you should have no problem going for some deep water lakers.

I usually target Walleye, Trout and perch.  Or what ever is around.  I have never fished for Lakers through the ice, but sounds like a great time when they're biting.

I can't say I blame you there. Nothing better that a good meal of Perch.  This is what I used to catch almost every weekend in VT.
