Orange Required by DEM?
« on: Feb 09, 2009, 05:27 AM »
My buddy fished beach pond from the RI side and they said a DEM check was made of the guys fishing there.  The officer told all that the area required 200 sq. of hunter orange on the lake due to small game season still going on.  Any one ever see this before?  I dont have a RI book but would love to know if it is in the fish section.  No ticket this time, but a warning was issued.
THanks for any info
Bob

BobB257,
About 5 years ago, I was ice fishing on Breakheart pond in RI.  This shallow pond is just a few miles from Beach pond.  DEM did a check and told me I had to have the hunter orange.  Breakheart pond is entirely inside the Arcadia state forest so I did not argue.  But told the officer that law is one of the stupidest I've ever come across.  Like an orange vest or hat is going to act like a force field to stop an errant bullet or shot pellet.  Because I can't imagine someone purposely taking a shot at someone in the open of a frozen pond.  (or anywhere else for that matter) I wonder if boaters have to wear hunter orange while fishing during hunting season.  FM.

that doesnt make sence at all.... what is small game doing on a lake or pond anyhow??? If you were a hiker walking around in the woods around here during hunting season you dont have to where orange but it is a good idea

It is stated in the wildlife areas that EVERYONE must wear 200 sq. in. of orange during hunting season.

I have never been to Beach Pond but I do know a pond up here in Northern RI has one of those signs 100 feet from the pond.   Is a bit weird though to require it on the ice, but if your parked in the woods I guess I could see it.

Thanks,
I dont have the RI fish book and I would love to know if they write the orange rule in it.  I agree with a pond in the woods, but beach is on a Maj. road and the access is a beach on the road.  I know in CT no loaded guns within 500 ft of a road, so I just cant see a warden pushing this on the ice of a huge pond.  Not arguing but I was kinda shocked to hear a threat of a ticket for ice fishing.  I also was under the impression that the CT book was in effect due to the maj of the pond being in ct but I have to look at that again.
Thanks for the clarification on the rules.

It did sound a little over the top, right or wrong RI DEM has been very active in 2009.
I've had my license checked 2 times in the last 3 trips. Perfect gentleman both times. Good news for the law abiding citizens.
