since you said your serious I'll respond...but I'm still not sure if your serous ;)
Waxies. I've caught more bows this season on waxies. had great luck last year.
Trout worms. They seem to be in short supply this year but I've had a few trout this season and many last year.
Ice Flies For jigging of course
Hellgramites. I,ve caught 2 or three this year.
Fathead minnows. I prefer the icicles but fat heads have help us land a few browns this season

still don't believe your serious  ;D

If you can get into some golden shiners in the particular water your fishing try using them.
I would think that because they are from the same water that they would be OK!
Might want to ask your DEP 1st it that's OK!
Read where some guys where trapping crayfish, and yes under the ice, and using them as bait.

I've never caught a bow, brookie, or brown through the ice and smelt can't be sold and icicles can't be found in alot of area bait shops so I was curious as to what might make a good substitute. Thanks jflood.

just a few more tips, suggestion, set up in the dark(early morning) and get the heck away from those tip ups and be very quite. Trout are very weary and get spoked easily.

can i just add to this....while trout can be very weary and spook easily...i too have seen the same spooky trout in fact change into anything BUT spooky and attack anything that moves at completely different times of the day or week or month for that matter.just my two cents worth...i really do think it all depends on the day

that's a fair point but how do you know when the "change" occurs or  when they go into a more aggressive, attack-like mode. My rule of thumb is.. I rather be quite and eliminate the noise factor. That's one less thing that I can rule that may have affected the fish not biting. Better safe than sorry

might be a dumb question here, but i have read on IS  a couple times about using shrimp. I assume that small cocktail shrimp would be perfect., but do they need to be raw or can they be boiled already?
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

Salmon eggs!!!
cut a bunch of holes in 3-7 fow and drop an egg in each (no line or antything.) then, every few minutes check the holes to se if the egg is missing. when you find one that is missing, just put an egg on your jiggin rod and drop it in. most of the time the trout will hit it before it gets below the ice. this works better if you check the holes continuosly, so the fish is closer to the hole. this trick works with corn too.

Is cutbait allowed? I catch a few suckers in the summer, strip out and freeze up a few lbs for winter bait, works for me. Comming in real handy this year in Vermont.

Roy,

The Bows I caught this last Sunday were all jigged in 10-12 FOW on  red/green micro jig tipped w/ maggot.

The water I was fishing was no live minnow water.

They hit the jigs very hard, but on the tips (w/ trout worms) it was a hit and spit only taking 3-4 ' of line.

I like to fish deep water but only go down about 5 to 10 feet deep. I use either a fathead minnow or meal worms.

I use salad shrimp almost on all my outings, just buy the cooked ones.

I use the same technique, as well as a lotta guys over here in NH.

I use Salmon Eggs, Night Crawlers. Smelt, Pin Heads, meal worms etc... all on light tackle- 4lb  flouro leader with small hooks #10 or smaller.

Just my preferance....

I tried using canned salad shrimp, but they kept falling apart an falling off the hook.  Did I just get a bad can, or is there a better style or brand?

shrimp ring shrimp and bagged frozen shrimp will generally be tougher because they are not impregnated with water so they are not soggy. they have a much firmer texture and hold up better on hooks.

Thanks for the advice.
Is the cooked frozen shrimp too mushy, is it better if it's raw?

Thanks in advance!!  This is what makes this a great site!!

Darkhouse I use the smallest raw shrimp you can get your hands on.  I have caught bigger trout using strips of herring on jigs like forager minnows etc...  Just hook them meat side then through the skin and give it a little squirt of smelly jelly.

The cooked shrimp is still tough but not as tough as plain raw shrimp. The raw shrimp may be better in some situations but it lacks the bright pink/orange colour which can bring fish in nad be the decider. The difference in toughness isnt that much so i would suggest the cooked bagged shrimp because of the color.

This time of year all the trout I catch have bellies full of snails. How do you match that hatch?
