Have you tried this product Drifter in our -40 temps?
Just wondering because I bought a tackle box at garage sale and this was in it. I just never tried it.

Some people believe sprayed on fishing bait, WD-40 covers up the scent of human hands on the bait to better lure fish. The WD-40 Company receives hundreds of letters from consumers confirming this use, but prefers not to promote WD-40 as a fishing lure since the petroleum-based product could potentially pollute rivers and streams, damaging the ecosystem.

Has anyone tried reel magic? I use it on all my gear seems too work. just don't know about extreme cold. enviormentaly friendly but expensive. just dry your gear and spray it on then give it a squirt before use.

Is this the stuff you're talking about?

It seems people have had good luck with the KVD line lube, however I don't know if it works in the cold.

What if you already have line on the reel, can you just spray it a few times around the spool, and be good to go?

Yes that's the stuff you can spray it on anything. I spray the hole reel and eyelets and line on reel. awsome on fly lines just spray line right on reel.

How's it at like 0 to -10? Have you ever had the line freeze while using this stuff?

Not sure.. yet. We have two reels spooled with old stuff from last year, but will be trying three new lines this year. I was thinking of braided line, but since I fish in the open, I was concerned about it freezing up. A little searching found a few who have tried line lube, and said it worked for them. So I am still considering something like Stren Microfuse Ice and Sufix Performance Ice.

Don't use braid if you're fishing out in the elements..... mono or flouro is best.

wd40 works excellent, especially on bait- i leaves a crazy slick. the problem with the stuff, is that it does pollute the water and i am certain it is not good for the fish. i used to use it all the time till i found out that it polluted . i think also that after sitting on your line for a while it will start to deteriorate the integrity of the line.

Thanks for your help. Not sure what's on our lines from last year.

Picked up three new Plueger reels this year, and need them spooled. Will be looking for some good mono or flouro. Back to the drawing board (aka google)  ;)

I've heard that PAM cooking spay works well... and it doesn't pollute!!

Personally, I make sure the heater is warm enough to keep the line free from ice.... ;D

No I haven't Terry.
I used to use it winter steelheading back in Ontario to keep my guides from freezing up.
Used it down to about -15

I spent 1985-89 in Cold lake AB and we commonly fished in the open when -40 and sometimes lower. We routinely sprayed our line on the reel down with WD40. It doesn't degrade the line bt we found it actually preserves it and keeps it limp. It does indeed help alot with ice build up. I only sprayed mine down 2 or 3 times thruout the season. Did it on my soft water reels as well.
haven't even thot of it for years until this post

I believe reel magic will do the same thing but not pollute. Musky guys use it on the Niagara late in the season and it works well preventing freezing tips and line. Im definitely gonna try it on the hardwater.

i believe the best thing to do is put a little vaseline on all of your eyes on your rod i read this in outdoor life and it works the water doesnt stick to it and it doesnt affect the way your line reels in

This thread got the green jello working. I'm wondering if rain-ex would do the trick. No water = no ice. I'm going to give it a try. A bottle of that stuff would do a gazillion rods and reels. Just a thought...

i picked up a bottle of aerosol windshield de-icer from wal-mart and spray it on my spring bobber when it starts to freeze up. works fairly good but you have to re-apply it every once in a while.
