Bait Help - Going to Beartooth Lake Again
« on: Feb 19, 2009, 01:55 PM »
I have my favorite baits and jig heads and what not to use for lake trout, but I was just curious what some of you might use in a lake at 9,000 feet for lakers?  I will have minnows and sucker meat.  What kind of jigs should I be using besides my regular chartreuse jig head?  I think I am going to go up again this Saturday and Sunday.  I will post pics if it's anything special.  Thanks.

Can't go wrong with a airplane jig in the glow in the dark.  Or anything that glows in the dark tipped with sucker meat.  We have killed them using a green spoons as well, like a Krock or a red/white daredevil, bestpart is they don't require bait.  Somedays the stinkers will turn onto spoons and won't touch the suckermeat.  Rocky Mtn should have the spoons you need at a wonderfull bargin ;).  Are you in the deeper water by the highway?  I know the northeast end of the lake is shallow and that's were we catch tons of brooktrout in the summer from  a boat.

Yeah, I'm sure Rocky will have a great deal for me.  I hate to say it, but I only go there if I have to.

I think I am going to have my buddy buy a few Northland Buckshot Rattle Spoons and try them too.

About 2 weeks ago was the first time I ever tried Beartooth.  It was pretty good.  I fished across the lake smack dab in the middle of the mountain.  I think I am going to try right along the highway this time though.

I also noticed a timbered point basically on the north end.  I though about exploring that a little bit.

Also, do you know if there's crawdads in the lake?  I have a few of them I might try.  You never know.

Thanks for the input.

dido on the using craw dads,

I have had a horrible time with those buckshot spoons.  They seem to fowl a lot!!  You don't jig them much more than 4"  or so otherwise they get fowled.  I own two and haven't got a fish yet on them

I didn't realize that about the crawdads.  I doubt they'd do that good anyways.

We've used the buckshots a lot at walleye lakes with good success.  I wonder if it had something to do with the bait you put on.  A chunk of meat probably flips around different than a little minnow.  Just my guess, I don't know.

I wonder if noise is even that big of a deal to have down there in deep water.

Which do you think is more important, glowing(sight) or rattles(sound)?

No bait on the buckshot, guess I will try tomorrow with a minnow on yellowtail.

I am going guess to sight and smell, but then again I can get them to hit a spoon with no bait

How did you end up fairing at Beartooth?
