Stupid spikes question...
« on: Dec 21, 2008, 07:57 PM »
They don't sell spikes locally, so I was thinking of ordering some from Vados. But here's the thing. I've had to clean up more than my fair share of REALLY dead stuff over the years. Kind of like that scene from Poltergeist where the porkchop crawls across the table, then dissolves into a writhing pile of maggots. The idea of sticking my hand into a bucket of 1000 of those things is a bit...  disturbing. My stupid question remains: They come chilled and relatively dormant, right? Right???

Not really, when they start to warm up a little they will be moving all over the place.  Not any different than any other bait though.  Waxworms, minnows mousies they all move around.  Try plastics.

I've found one trick is to keep the sawdust or bedding they come in dry.  If it becomes wet from condensation or whatever get them into dry stuff quickly.

I find the key is to take about 10-12 of them and tuck them into the corner of your mouth like sunflower seeds at a ballgame.  No different.

 ;D
That taxidermy man back home gonna have a heart attack when he see what I bring'em!!

At room temperature they are very active. The solution is to keep them in the refrigerator at a colder temperature and place them outside the night before fishing. The colder they are the more dormant they become and rubbery to the feel. That or adjust your frame of mind when dealing with them. I take it you don't want to eat any finger foods after handling the maggots(lol)
