Cabelas 5.5" Fish Camera
« on: Jan 15, 2009, 07:45 PM »
My Cabela's Fish Camera came in today.  It's cold out, but I'm so looking forward to using this puppy.  Flip side to the cold, is now the spots I love have plenty of ICE.  Wrap this puppy up in some Christmas Garland. ;D and send it down the hole.
Anyone have one of these?  It looks to be a really good value.(great quality for the money).

Saving for a flasher now.

It is/was $97.49  comes with battery, battery charger, Monitor case, 50' of cable.  I turned it on in the livingroom, and it looks like a pretty good picture.  Can't wait to see what it looks like in 50' of water.  I researched the web forums and reviews before pulling the trigger on it, thinkin how good could it be for under 100bucks.
But it's gotten great reviews.  We'll see.
It is said to be on par with the aquaview.  Much better than the cheaper 'FishTV'.
I plan on hooking up my camera or camcorder to the video out and recording fish I see.(yes, it does this too).  I'll post pictures and videos as they become available.

Cheers,
Newfound

Newfound,

I have this camera and it works great!! I used it all last season will no problems at all. Nice case, good picture, battery life , etc. Like with any camera, except the panning models, if the lake has current its tough to keep the camera 100% steady. I just duct taped the camera cord to board over the hole... this stoped the camera cord line twist caused by the current. Let me know how the recording works.... I'll be trying the same thing this year.

I too bought the 100$ cabelas fish cam. How can you go wrong? I've blown more than that at the bar in a night and woke up hoping like hell i wouldn't have anything to show for it :-\ but seriously  I wanted to try it out before i replied, got the chance yesterday up on lake willoughby for the vt trout opener.  It worked great for me. I saw a bunch of trout and caught two of them on screen (very cool). I really think it will improve my jigging technique being able to see how fish respond.  The only trouble was getting the thing pointed in the right direction but i think its partly because the new cable is a little kinky it seemed to improve over the course of the day. Hope you had as much fun as me and good luck.  BD

cameras were pretty useless today on Newfound.  Not only mine, but I heard over 5.5 that others thought it a waste.  Very dark with all the snow, and alot of sediment in the water today for some reason.
I'll look into some sort of light to shine down the camera hole.
Put the plow on the 4x4 and plow out the area you fish.  LOL

hey Tippin, I saw you used yours today.  I was down toward the River today, Current, and alot of sediment where I was.
I'd like to try it off of Wellington or Whittemore.  Probably see alot more.  I was thinkin about a light system.  Does it spook the fish?

They do, but it get's dark down there.
One person on Newfound actually plows the area on the lake he sets up, to let in more light.

I've been using underwater cams for about 4 years now. I have the original Atlantis panning cam. I also checked out the Cabelas cam while at Cabelas in ME. I was extremely disappointed with the performance of their panning cam compared to the one you have as far a visibility quality of the camera.
Some suggestions: The deeper you go the harder it is to see. I target about 35 feet (although my camera has 125 feet of cable). The more natural sunlight you can get through the ice the better the visibility. I shovel the snow around my house too for this purpose. In Newfound, your not going to get much more than 15' of visibility with your camera But that's still pretty good. The IR lights only seem to reflect sediment in the water making a "snow storm" appearance. I also have Green and Red LED lights on my camera and that makes a big difference compared to IR lights. You should also play around with your contrast and brightness settings on you monitor. That will help throughout the day. The lights don't seem to bother them and not too sure about the camouflaging your cable. It doesn't bother them at all. In fact, I've had Lakers swim right up to the camera and check it out, even hit it once which sent the camera spinning.
I would still purchase the Cabela's panning camera as Cabelas has an awesome warranty policy. A friend of mine had one (non panning) for 16 months and it filled with water. They replaced it at no charge and even expedited shipment so that he could have it for the derby. If you don't like it, send it back for either another camera or a store credit. You cant go wrong.
I had my camera at 96 fow one time and could only see about 1 foot away at best with the red and green light on. It's hard to fish without it now. I also run a fish finder (Lowerance X85) which shows me that fish are in the area and then I pan to pick them up on the camera. Works pretty good that way.
I believe the camera you have is a Sony CCD camera which are very good. Bring it out to the house sometime and we can play with it.
Good luck and don't catch them all,
JIGGIN.

I have had nothing but trouble with t=my camera from cabelas.  The first one I had got water in the lens so when the second one came i calked around the lens, it helped.  This year I got the camera out and had no problems until last week, the picture is just crap, can't see anything, the imagine has lines thorugh it and shakes.  I would suggest saving a  little more money for the aqua view.

Which one did you get?
The FishTV is said to be garbage.  I got the Advanced Angler.
I would listen to others on Ice Shanty and get the flasher first if looking at one or the other.  But at $97 bucks,  It seemed worth getting.

Yes, I had the angler edge, it's junk, I bought a lowrance M68c flasher and pretty much never have the need for a camera anymore, save your money.
