Any word about academy bay? Hour and half for me. Would love to get over there at least once this year

Just came off the ramp area and found 5”-6” pretty much everywhere. Went a ways out to a spot and seemed to be a steady 6” further out. Ice actually seemed to be in good shape. Only one keeper eye. Went 18 3/4”

I’d be careful at academy bay walking on from the academy. Ice isn’t always the best right there. I’m sure the ice is ok out where the fish are but getting on may be tricky there spud away

thanks for the info. I always stay clear of the inlet at academy. I will definitely have my spud.

Can anyone tell me where it is OK to park on this lake besides the launch.  I know where that is but am not familiar with parking on other portions of the lake.

Where do you park to fish academy Bay?

Where do you park to fish off the beach?

Thanks.  I hope to go out this afternoon.

I believe you can park at academy on the bay and at the beach.

Yes you can park at the academy awards but be careful people are saying the ice toward shore to be thin I have not here. There's lots of people fishing all over the weekend a lot of small perch

Fished maxi today from 5 am to about 1200 . Drilled numerous holes fished alot of humps and drops finding weeds / grass. Walked probably a mile and half ! And the bite was on fire ! ...... For three inch perch and gills . We could not get away from them ! Didn't matter depth they were there !! Also was catching these shiner looking big minnows ?? Never caught these before and also another fisherman said the same . Alll in all good day to be out and pulling the shanty on this long walk was a breeze, it walked right beside me like a dog !

Caught one of those shiners last night myself! Yeh a lot of dink perch this year whoever my friends and I have landed quite a few eyes so far this year too. Got a 17” this morning and a 10 1/2” gill and a bunch of dink perch. Slow day today. Ice conditions are nice down by launch. Solid good ice! Not sure about anywhere else though seen quite a few guys all over today.

I've also caught these shiner like minnows. I keep them and use them for tip up bait. Caught a 3lb lg mouth bass yesterday on another lake using one.  Maxi lake is a stubborn lake on some days, then on others she gives up much. Either way, always love fishing there. Keep keeping on!

You would think being in a area that these shiners are in like this .that they would attract some bigger fish and creat a feeding frenzy !? I would drill numerous wholes in lines marking 10 to 22 ft and could catch these things in every whole and every depth
Title: Re: Maxi
Post by: RobertFitz on Feb 11, 2019, 08:14 AM
Yeah that's really the only negative about my trip to there. That and no bait shops. Someone told me as they were coming off they had to stop in Rochester to get their minnows and others bait.
Title: Re: Maxi
Post by: Spooled85 on Feb 11, 2019, 09:13 AM
Ya that is an issue. I myself come from the west and have two bait shops along the way . One being butches bait and bass lake bait shop. Butches hasn't had minnows last a new but basslake bait has everything u need . A little high priced but if you need it you will pay it I guess. Maxi is a hard lake to fish at times but can produce a PB at any time
Title: Re: Maxi
Post by: dfishman on Feb 11, 2019, 10:31 AM
There is a bait shop on the west side of koontz lake also.  Depends on where you come from, but it is not too far from Culver.

Thank you. I used to hate fishing that lake. But it’s been the only place I’ve been this year. Except for 3 hours on bass lake. It is a tough lake for sure. But some really nice fish if u put in some work. That is between two of us. Not just myself.

Still a very good Hall. And on a lake as tough as Maxi is or can be to  fish. It makes it that much more rewarding I have yet to have a good fishing trip to Maxie but I have seen on camera what is down there and that's what keeps me coming back

Making the maiden voyage this Sat... Ive had guys telling me for years that this is where I should go (and in the same breath warning me of how tough she can be) My buddy and I will be there from about 5 to midnight hopefully... I may sleep in the truck and try again before the sun comes up (not really wanting to sleep on the ice by myself lol) ive been looking at the sonar map and have a couple places picked off the ramp ( wish me luck) being my first time I'm just wondering what the water clarity is... What the bottom is composed of... How hard it will be to find weeds (hopefully there are some fish holding em too) any pointers would be appreciated!

When I went Last weekend I could see down to about 10fow.  Everywhere I went by the public ramp had weeds tucked on the bottom that came up roughly about a foot and soft bottom all around.( at least what I could see through the hole and on sonar) the hole right off the ramp a lit of people shacked up on when i was there and a lot stayed near their first holes drilled for most of the day

From what I seen its a nice town with some nice people. Seen a hockey game going on and people ice skating by their house and by the public park. I would have done probably better if I had more tackle. Second season ice fishing(not counting the 4 years I lived in Juneau Alaska) so still new to this.

Got out last night and caught 5 different species of fish. Got 2 walleye, an 18 incher and a real small one of maybe 8 or 9 inches. Ice was still holding up well at about 7 inches. Lot of open water on the east side of the lake. Way more than just geese keeping it open. It was nice last night, fished 8 hours with no shanty and was comfortable

Ya I guess rite before dark one of the nerds that run threw everyone with there wind sail deals ran in the open water for the third time this season. He walked back across the lake is what I was told from a few fisherman that talked to him. I got there not ling after it happen. I guess they had a hover craft out there getting it out of the water

And anyone going be careful of the i near the edges . The ice at the ramp is a little sketchy getting on a four-wheeler broke a big piece and has about a 5 inch crack and water was coming up threw it . And I'm hearing the ice getting on at academy Bay is no good and very thin if not open in places

fished from 1030am till 830pm caught one gill after dark. Didn't have any minnows, planed on getting some at Timberwolf in Rochester. Was there around 930am and closed, grrrrrrrr.

Did see several closed mouthed bass/perch on my Un-Cam and right at 6:05pm seen the 1st eye. Seen 7 more eyes before 6:30, total of 8 eyes in 25 minutes but wouldn't bite my Rapala just looked at it.

Went to Maxi this afternoon and wanted to fish the east shore. Once I pulled up, I realized there was too much open water in that area but remembered passing the academy bay with guys out there.  So, I turned my attention there and there were 5 guys out huddled fishing so I carefully made my way out to their area.  I stayed a football field away so as not to disturb them.  I had my gas auger and drilled/fished probably 30 holes in 3 hours.  Lots of little - and I mean little perch - the size of a pencil or shorter and several of the shad type silver minnows.  Was using a moon glow/bee moth on one rod and would switch to a jiggin rap and at times a jig/minnow.  All in all, good ice and a beautiful day to be out with my toys and this awesome creation He has given us... enjoy the day...

We set up in about 10 fow, out from the ramp near the drop off. Tried minnows, minnow heads, wax worms, water wigglers and only had maybe 3 official bites lol. With the camera you would watch the enormous perch  ::) just come up look at the bait and swim away, take about closed mouths. The ones that bit couldn't get the minnows in their mouths . I really thought the water wigglers (http://www.knutsonlivebait.com/images/wigglers.jpg)  would be the ticket, but just stare at it and swim away. We fished from 2:30 - 7:30, and it was fun to get out with my son. I think I have to much stuff, because a shanty that is almost 7x7x7 should be big enough for 2 guys, but it was pretty tight quarters for us, 2 vexilars, the camera and bait. We had 2 dead sticks with minnows and 2 holes that we would jig out of. Was a nice night out and it was my first time using the Eskimo Quickfish 3, I like how easy it is to set up.

What was the deal with the drone that was flying over head? The thing hovered above me for 5 minutes or so why I was outside the shanty smoking, then it flew above guys that were 50 yards away and did the same thing, It would just hover of a group of people and then fly off.

One thing I would like to add to this is, it's been  a long time since I ice fished  and I forgot how much more ice fishermen are more easy to share info. compared to open water anglers. I wonder why that is?

Doug

ice ball those stupid drones!  I put a sling shot in my bucket and some nice rocks for them.  I was pretty damn good with the sling shot as a kid.  im sure it will all come back to me when needed  they are an invasion of privacy IMO and should be outlawed, unless over your own property.

Doc is correct, the east side is WIDE open, and not just a small area. From curtis ditch to almost perry point. My advice, having fished this lake for Years,
Is to NOT take peoples word about safe ice. Safety gear a must, number one being yer spud bar. Ive been on 8 inches of ice, and 20yds away Boom...3inches. I recon'd alot of the lake yesterday. Keep clear of the east. Its not just a goose hole opening. Most everywhere else i drilled was 6 to almost 9in. Heres a few tips on Max... You need minnows, i have seen where dead sticking a jignrap outfishes all, to the opposite, an unreal meat rig where yer not gettin hit w/o 5 minnows on a jignrap. Moving around, drilling mega holes and hole hopping, 90% of the time is futile. They say never fish a memory but for me its the rule on Max. Find a structure, set up and fish it hard. Mind i dont mean Dont move, but the peech and eyes are Monster spooky, more so than ANYWHERE. Whatever yer structure is... a saddle, a point, a dropoff a Hump, a double hump. Its my opinion to stay ON YOUR Structure. Swiss cheesing is a mistake. Your waiting on a pod of eyes to roll thru, and they Will, whether they hit the or not, or your using the right gear/bait is what you figure out. Same with them perch...ive seen 18in perch run in pods like walleye, on this lake. Yes...18 inchers. I,ve caught them. Generally yer waitin on a pod...dinks first, the bigger ones alot of times follow. Feb is the Time on the perch, but you,ll get yer a$$ kicked more times than not. Its a percentages and law of averages thing. Biggest tip i can give on perch, is a pinched Off head of yer minnow. The times ive hammered them, THATS the ticket. Including Regular fresh change of the head, dont toss them dead ones out. Another tip...stay away from the crowds, nuff said there. All that goin on around you is detremental. Another... i will Not fish this lake without a splitshot, RED HOOK rig on a rod. Its my go to Rig. Outfishes Everything, with GLOW jignrap a moderate 2nd. You Still take your whuppins on this lake regardless. Your NOT goin out and gettin a bucket of eyes on yer first trip. If you do, go to the casino buddy. Its your time. I,ve fished it 35yrs plus, I am no pro. But i have the time invested to provide this post. Ive been beat up on the perch so far, but i have had 2 good evenings on the eyes. I will try to post a pic of em. I fish the gps coords i have had for Years, when i can get to them. Come open water, Mark your waypoints, come winter, Stay On Your Structure. Sooner or later it pays. Just MY 81 CENTS

Don't know how close they came to you guys fishing but they're under the same rules as snowmobiles, at high speeds its against the law to come real close to fisherman. Not sure the exact distance but there's regulations when going high speeds.

One year at Nyona a lake resident made several trips around a bunch of us at the N.end. One guy finally had enough and called the CO. The CO looked at the tracks and said he was comeing way to close and next time take photos to show proof of dangerous driving to close.

Maybe one of the ice sails came to close to a fisherman, he got scared and carped his pants.

All kidding aside, If you've never taken a dump out on the ice then you've not ice fished long. Thing is just don't leave it, that's #*^@(!?. At least kick it down a hole.

Suggestion make your own porta pot. Hang a Walmart bag inside a 5gal bucket, they fit perfect just hang part of the bag outside the bucket. Set and do you job, pull the bag out and double tie it. Make sure you take it off the ice.

The DNR need to leave the porta pots out in the winter.

I've had a shat  ;D or two or three  ???  on the ice. Just like trash or dead fish, I never leave shat on the ice. Call it "ice fishing etiquettes" if you may.
So enough about Shat! That open hole is expanding every day now. Be careful out there. I found out how quick the ice thickness can fluctuate in some areas with major pucker factor  :o  involved. I managed 4 eyes, a bunch of perch.... brought home two keeper eyes and two keeper perch last night. Lots of fingerling perch. It's a wonderful fishery and I always enjoy being out there.

Before going to most bait shops its best to call to see if they're open, you never know. No since wasting time/gas driving to a BS only to find them closed.

Randy's closed long ago unless someone bought it, this is the Randys N. of Culver on 17.

10 miles east of Maxy in Rochester has a shop called Timberwolf tradingpost but I would call first. Saturdays they supposed to be open from 8am-2pm, I was there around 930am and closed.

I just looked at Bass lake bait and tackle facebook site, posted on Jan 22 "We're now open 7 days a week 7 am to 4 pm". I've never been there so call and be sure. Their FB site shows (574) 772-0229 but I got a recording when I called it.

CLosed Thursdays is from an old facebook post. On Nov. 15 they posted "Starting next week we'll be going to Winter hours. 8am to 4pm. Closed Tuesday and Thursday".

Was thinking about Maxy Sat mourn, then searched Culver weather forecast and changed my mind. Don't know how close culver is to Starke County Airport, but looks like allot of rain and high of 48. Anyone going watch getting off that may be the biggest problem.

Saturday

A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 48. Southeast wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Fished the bay all day yesterday.  Several little ones, including a 10" walleye.  Caught the biggest rock bass I've ever seen and one 10" gill.  Very slow overall.  Ice was good when we got on, 7-8" but was softening by end of day.  Broke through at last step onto seawall.   Got wet up to my knees, but beautiful day and glad to get out one last time!  Be safe!

Hit the ice around 10:30 am and there was no one there. The Northwest/North/Northeast end of the lake is all open water. If you want to fish... it will have to be out of the south end, unless you can launch a boat from the north end. Edges are worn and weak, I stepped through getting on and off tonight. The ice was 7-9 inches everywhere I drilled today. I was a mile out from the boat ramp. I checked the ice from the boat ramp all the way out to my location. Seen the 1st fisherman @ 2pm and then a few others showed up for the evening. The bite was the worst I experienced this season. Still glad to be out, regardless the bite. Be safe out there.

I'm not free til Monday. Would love to hear a positive report then. If its do-able Monday would anyone wanna meet up with me there? Rather not go alone

That's pretty neat ! did you set it on the ice and watch it walk back to the whole? The first time I caught one it was about the same size but had big red Gill that hung out its sides are the head I set it on the ground about 20 feet from the water and it walked all the way back.I once had someone tell me that the Michigan record on one of those is like 18 in

It's a walking Turd!  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: The Necturus maculosus. I've seen other pics from past post of the mudpuppy being caught from Maxi. Every now and then if you have a underwater camera you will see them come through. Salamanders are cool creatures.

Got out last Friday fished from 9am till 5pm, 1 dink perch and 1 rockbass. Did have something attack my camera and seconds after that a walleye came swimming in from the cams direction, only eye I seen. I've had smally's attack my cam at Maxy but this walleye is a first 4me.

Ice was 9" and solid around the launch edge. Wanted to go back out Sat mourn but to windy. With the rain and warm temps I'm est. Culver is probably done, anyone check it out Sunday?

Im hoping to check it out monday or tuesday if i dont hear of anything. Running arronds today, a lot of stuff looks as if it didnt get beat uo too bad. Some open edges and that, to be normal of course. We certainly didnt get as much rain as they were calling for.

Deffinetly on the last few days anyways, but maybe i can squeeze one or 2 more trips in yet. Just maybe. 😁

The walleye bite was for about 20 min, right at dark. All small but a bunch of them.
