Lake Maps for Montana
« on: Nov 03, 2007, 06:31 AM »
Wondering if anyone has experience with the Montana lake maps offered by http://www.fishingmap.com/montana/

They list maps available for Canyon Ferry, Flathead, Fort Peck Res, Georgetown and Holter Lakes.  Are they any good?  Are there other MT lake maps available anywhere else?

I have not seen a lake map for any MT lakes that I would call detailed enough for using to locate potential spots to fish on.  Usually the contour lines are spaces at 20 foot intervals.  Alot can happen in 20 feet.  If you find a good one, let us know.

if you have never fished any of those bodies of water they are a good place to start, local input will get you further because it won't be generalized.

I have fished on four of the lakes that they have those maps for: Flathead, Whitefish, Canyon Ferry, and Fort Peck.  And I've caught fish in the zones they say you should fish in...so they aren't lying!!!

Good Fishing

The great and wise Jigmaster5000  led me to this site last year.  It is a good start.

Oops.  I hit the "insert ftp link" button instead of the "insert hyperlink" button.  Thanks for straightening me out.

There is some local guy doing Bathametric maps for the lakes around here...I have one of Flathead and they just came out with one of Whitefish, Tally, Little Bitterroot, McGregor....I think he is just wondering around making maps...they are really nice laminated maps too...

I can find out who the guy is if anyone is interested...  I'd love to see one of Fort Peck!

There is a hydrographic map available for Ft Peck Reservoir.  It was recently completed by a guy using the old topographic maps which predate the construction of the reservoir.  I believe he then did extensive ground-checking.  There was a thread about this on the Walleyes Forever site (www.walleyesforever.co m/) within the last 6 months or so.

If you find out how to buy this map, contact info, etc., please post as I, and I'm sure others here, would like to have such a map.

Also, Terraserver has lots of old maps and photos which can be surprising useful given the fluctuations in MT reservoirs.  Also, given the fact that the shallow areas are where we find the provebial 20% of the water that holds 80% of the fish.  An old photo that shows areas that are now flooded is very useful, extremely so for ice fishing.
