Bought the Ion G2 this year and that thing flat out drills! With the progression of the electrics in the past few years there is probably not a bad one out there. Read through the old posts as mentioned and make a decision based on your fishing style. By the way, I don't miss my gas auger at all! Retired that about 5 years ago. Happy drilling!!

Switched to an Ion 3 years ago. No regrets. Drills more holes than I can dream of fishing.  Owned two new Jiffy gassers over past 30 years but truly . . . no comparison to a battery unit.  Model "A" to a Ferrari.

I’m reminded every early season when I first hear the sputtering and see the blue haze from poorly maintained gas augers fresh out of the garage how grateful I am for the little maintenance that’s required for an electric model.

I bought a second hand unused 8'' Strikemaster hand auger at a flea market in Whitehall in Sept. hoping it would fit on my Clam plate and it did. It drills a lot better than i thought it would and it doesn't weigh much more than the 6'' that came with the kit. Only paid $10 for it too.

The G2 Ion ..may have up their game you probably cant go wrong with either ..now add in any extras... deals ..and original price points that may help with the decision making . Note which blade type you prefer as I believe the SM has several options

I'm the proud owner of a new Strikemaster 40v 8 inch model.  I will echo the other replies saying I will never go back to gas.  There are very few detractors, and so many benefits to the electric.  My only concern going forward is longevity, simply because they haven't been around long enough to be proven.  If initial quality and performance is any indicator, though, I won't have anything to worry about.

I went with the Strikemaster Lithium 40v 8” last year. By far the best investment I’ve made. Actually enjoy drilling holes now.

Been using Ryobi 18v hammer drill with4 amp hr batteries with a clam plate and hand auger bit mora blades. So far it’s is pretty amazing.  Last year it drilled 18 holes through 38 inches of ice on  one battery. So far his year been averaging about 30 holes a battery. Will not go back to gas. Only thing you will want is extra set of blades they must be sharp.  Great deal as drill is 70.00 and you can get 2 4 amp hr batteries and 2 3 amp hr batteries for 100.00.

I bought the StrikeMaster and would highly recommend it. I chose StrikeMaster over the Ion because it was a bit cheaper and came with a free extra battery. In my opinion electric augers are the only way to go.

I'm sure I wouldn't miss my gas auger either if I had a Strikemaster 40V or an Ion. I would however, miss the $550 that I am currently saving for a new fishfinder.

I believe your auger drill unit with fit EZPZ onto the SM 40v powerhead ..not certain what blades or how many you have on your drill unit but think that they would.
