Pumpkinseeds?
« on: Dec 13, 2012, 11:41 AM »
When fishing for gills i often catch a bunch of seeds. just wondering what your thoughts are on these colorful lil' guys. I generally only keep the exceptionally large ones, if i keep any.

Taste much better than a Rock Bass ::) ;D. Not a targeted favorite but they do put up a decent fight and aren't overly picky on bait choice

I love them, they don't circle the hole like a bull but they thump more like an eye fights. Nice thick fish when they hit 9 plus inches, and beautiful colors.

Yeah when they get big they can be pretty fun to catch. They arent my favorite fish, but it really sets me off when people leave piles of them on the ice because they think they are garbage. definitely not cool. >:(

When I fish the white on my yak for smallies I normally end up hooking a few. They are some cool looking fish. The funny thing is they normally slam a lure that is equal to or larger than they are. But, they put up a pretty good little fight and can get pretty beefy for a panfish.

By far my favorite fish to eat. Firm, tasteful meat! Great for tacos!

I love catching seeds, and of course eating them too; mostly when on ice, though.

Pumpkinseeds get called kiver around here, and my own father can't tell the difference between a bluegill and a kiver/pumpkinseed and thinks they're both trash fish... So much for age and wisdom.

People who leave any fish on the ice tick me off, either eat it or let it go or send it my way.

I love pan frying kiver and bluegills, they taste even better in the winter.

We have a lake by us that has beautiful big hybrids...neat looking fish. Primarily looks like a 'Seed with the 'Gill vertical bars.
