First time for perch??
« on: Mar 04, 2006, 09:16 AM »
I  just bought a few jig poles and I am hoping to get after some perch tomorrow at the King.  What bait or  lures are best for perch. Pictures of lures would be appreciated.

On a related jigging note...How much action should I give to a Swedish pimple. Is more subtle or more up & down. I think my technique is off. Once again, I'm still learning :)

We use small jigs tipped with minnows.  Here's a picture of a perch my son caught a couple of days ago on a tiny Marmish Larva #2 jig tipped with a small shiner, jigged a few feet off the bottom in about 20' of water.  On a jig this small a fresh minnow can provide most of the action.

There are a ton of good lures/jigs you can use for perch....you need to try a few and see what works for you.

My Biggest Perch this season were all caught on Marmish lures..usually a maggot...which is the second row in this photo

I also Like Jigging Raps in small sizes

You will also get a ton of guys who like to use the Hali...I tip them with a minnow head...

The Genz Worm is also pretty popular thou I have not had much luck on them.

Last but not least this is a jig I was told about this season and I love it, works good on perch and excellent on gills.

As for motion..It all depends on what the fish want...Try small lifts with a slow drop, then go aggressive, also try the deadstick. Once you find what the fish want, they are all yours...Hope this Helps

jflood, they pretty much hit it all on the head.

Great posts you two, icejuncky and donmac. Nice perch too!

Only thing i can add is you will normally find that perch are always close to the bottom. Start at the bottom and work up. Even an inch off the bottom.
That's why they call it fishing and not catching!

I'll place a bet that just about every icefisherman worth his/her salt has a collection like this. ;D

Has the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
From whose womb comes the ice?
And the frost from heaven, who gives it birth?
By the breath of God ice is given and the broad waters are frozen.
The waters harden like stone and the surface of the deep is frozen.

There's lots of jigs that will catch perch. The trick is to try enough different jigs, bait and, above all, presentations...to find out what they want. Sometimes it's as simple as a splitshot and hook with a minnow.

Amen brother, sometimes you just need to "down size" I use this technic 90% of the winter, under a split shot and slipbobber. Bury that hook in a micro minnow, set that minnow horz and slight jig, fish on the ice! Also works with maggies.

A buddy of mine gave em to me down at the lodge. (big fly guy) He said exactly what you said, Tip them with a minnow, let them drift and their deadly. Ive been itchen to try em out. (but through ice)!

And with a jig collection like yours, I would not even call them jigs, should be called, NUGGETS

Me too, I think I have 10-12, and thought I was being over prepared...I can only use one at at time, and my fingers are always to cold to tie them on.  I keep three jigging rods all rigged, and choose from them on the ice.

Looks like I have some work to do to become worth even less than salt :-[ :-[

If your hands are always too cold, you should try quick snaps. They look like a "P" with a little flare. It only takes about 5 seconds to change your jig. They also add a nice action to your jig.

I have been hunting or fishing almost everyday of my life. The rest have been wasted.

a dropshot rig with a size 6 gold aberdeen hook above a sinker is the cheapest way to go tipped with a fathead or a buckeye minnow. tight lines

the size all depends on  your body of water............for the marmish jigs i use the largest size they sell whcih is a 3 I beleive, as for the the Hali's I use what I can find since they sell out early, I like a 2 to 3 inch dropper on them when perch fishing
