Tip Up carrying
« on: Jan 16, 2020, 10:31 PM »
So anyone got any clever ways to transport tip ups? It’s driving me crazy!  I have used buckets and coolers and just dumped in a sled.  What do you guys use? Anything clever?  I was thinking of having a gizmo sewed kinda like they do with wrenches with pockets to slide them in and roll them up.  I got no idea but am so tired of the ridiculous mess

In a bucket with a rubber band around the spool.

I use a ski boots bag. Add elastic bands to the end of your tipups to keep hooks wrapped on the spool when you're done with them.

A wader bag is a similar good option. Ventilation is a good thing when the ice and snow melts.

I use these from the retailer formally know as "Cabelas"  they work well but are a bit to temperature sensitive for a 5 star rating.  I think the Beaver Dam set up might be perfect.

This works for me. I also cut about the last 3" off the bottom of another 5 gal. bucket and attached it to the bottom of my sled. The tip up bucket slides right into it. Minnow bucket and hole covers inside as well. No longer tips over while transporting.

If you use rail style tip ups,  you could make wooden sleeves instead of PVC.

I use a Stanley toolbox I picked up at Walmart.
Holds about 8 if you put the upper tray in it.

@ GiddiupMT
I use the Same Toolbox, with a clear top to charge my jigs.
Perfect for Tip ups and gear, but I still dont think its Big enough to keep up with
the flow of tackle that I acquire this time o' year.

I put mine in a bucket and use either a rubber band (or something similar) around the spool. To take is step further, I find rubber bands freeze, wear-out and break over time, so I use hair ties...

Velcro cable ties are a great alternative.

3x4inch plastic gutter downspout. Cut to fit. Lock them in with a bolt, pin or velcrow. Stack in bucket, milk crate, or throw in sled. I was thinking about mounting 9 on a board and making a bracket to hold the board on my ski sled.

A friend of mine came up with this idea of making individual sleeves for each tip up with vacuum sealer bags. You can put each tip up in one: line, hooks, bait (I use frozen smelt for pike) and all. Then I carry them in the longer version of a plastic bucket (it must be about a 7-gallon bucket). This works great for the six tip-ups you are allowed in Montana. The bags are heavy and don't tear, and you don't have to worry about tangled lines and hooks.
