iPhone down the hole! A story of persistence
« on: Feb 04, 2013, 11:48 PM »
So I dropped my iPhone down a hole on jan 20th in 18' of water. I had my camera with so i knew it was right below me. I tried for a couple hours to hook it but with no luck. Went back on the 21st with a heavy duty magnet, 5 fiberglass chimney rods and a plastic bucket. Well I learned iPhones arnt magnetic and 18' of fiberglass chimney rods can't be used to scoop up iPhones.
Was busy the following weekend but decided to make a trap out of a coffee can and rat traps. I finished my spring loaded iPhone retriever and went to the spot on the ice las Friday, 12 days after dropping it in the hole. Was able to retrieve it with the second attempt. Took it home stuck it in a ziplock of rice and put it on a heat register. Last night I took it out and put it on the charger and went to bed. Woke up this morning and IT TURNED ON!

Congratz on getting your phone back. I actually almost lost my ipod touch down my hole on sunday. I was listening to a podcast and I saw a fish coming up on my screen and as I set the hook, my ipod (still attached to my head phones) dropped down in the hole, just dangling there in the water and I quickly pulled up my it up... and soon the fish even though it was just a small-fry bluegill.

That's unbelievable, I wonder if it will keep working. Mine went to pots at work going in and out of the air conditioned truck. I was drying it every other night until it finally quit. Way to go on  sticking with it

Nice!

My iPod lusted so badly for a brief swim this fall while fly fishing that it got its wish and then some. That night I surrounded it with rice in a ziploc and left it there a few days.  DOA.  Took it to my local i-Doctor. He cracked wise that it likely had a rice allergy and suffered i-pulmonary aspiration :-\

there are water damage stickers in it.  they will all have changed colors and any warranty with apple care is void.

Apple doesnt recommend the use of alcohol to clean the iPhones.
How to clean apple products: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226

In part most iPhones or electronic devices that I have seen that have been dropped in or submerged in water will eventually fail even if it currentl works.  If not some parts of it will cease to function at some time.  Corrosion will eventually take its toll.

Applecare does not cover water damage or accidental damage.  They do sell an accidental damage plan which is very pricey.

Thats nuts! I dropped mine down a hole 2 seasons ago and miraculously grabbed it as it was sinking down the abyss. Never moved so fast in my life. It was below zero that day and both the phone and my arm froze solid within minutes. The phone still worked though! Still works to this day with no issues other than needing an upgrade to a new one  ;D
