Water depth
« on: Feb 09, 2011, 02:07 PM »
Just started fishing for Pike with tip-ups last few weeks with no success.  Was wondering whats the deepest FOW people have caught Pike in??? ( I know people usually target shallower weeds)

Just thought this would be interesting and helpful to newb's like me

Thanks to all in advance for the input

It depends on the oxygen levels where you are fishing. On the two lakes I fish them I have been having my best luck this year in 6 to 12 foot of water. On the one lake the oxygen levels drop off quite a bit so I fish them in the channel in 6-8 FOW.

It was!

Someone in another thread asked which transducer they should get for fishing in 0-200 ft, so I was taking a little poke :)

Have caught them in the 3 to 13 FOW.  Not too many deep pike ponds here in RI.

big pike love to chase panfish around the deep grass beds up in Adirondack Lakes.  I've seen them chasing crappies and perch around on the aqua-vu in 45 feet of water in a number of different lakes in the 'daks.

30fow on a ridge between two deeper bays.  I've actually caught far more pike this year in 15-25fow than I have in shallower spots.  I've had better luck using perch for bait on deep tip-ups that aren't near weedbeds.

I pulled a nice one up from about 40 FOW in open water....but have only gotten one thru the ice and that was in only 3-4 FOW

I have never really tried  deeper tip-ups for pike...always been shallower

I usually catch pike on most lake that I fish, no matter how deep the FOW. I have caught pike in 3' and in 30'. As far as the shallow weeds being the best spot, I would agree if you're looking picklers....set up on a fast breaking wall...if you get one, you know it's gonna be a slob!!! Good Luck!!
