First gator
« on: Feb 21, 2009, 12:25 PM »
Well I have been pike fishin all year and today it finally happened. My first gator. 37.6 inches long. Did not have a scale but it was fat. It was around 17lbs I have pics and will post later. Took me at lest 15 mins to land it on 45lb florcarbon. Played the fish like it was on 6lb test. What a good day  :) :) :)

45lb line?! 15 minutes?!

Took me 10 minutes to fight an 18lb carp on 8lb line. Your numbers must be off, or you just let the fish roam around willingly.

Ok pike have shrap teeth that break the line. I broke off to pike this year one on 45lb floricarbon and the other on 50lb power pro braid you have to play the fish till it wants to come up the hole

Still sounds strange to me. I know that pike have sharp teeth, but they aren't really saw-like as the carp's dorsal fin, which can actually saw through any line. With 45lb line I'd just be using it like a rope to tug on.

Bull, ive caught tons of carp and never had one's dorsal fin cut the line. the chances of having line break to pikes teeth on the other hand is obviously very high.

Sounds like a nice fish MA Bass, can't wait to see the pics myself. not sure why so many people here feel they have to give others a hard time.

Sweet!  Some day I'll be in the 'caught a pike' club, too.

Did you catch it on a tip-up?

Nice job with the pike...you played the fish right.

The minute you start horsing a BIG pike in is when you'll get cut-off.

Good Job

I've been sitting here for the last half hour trying to equate a Pike's teeth to a Carp's dorsal fin? I don't fish for Pike as much as you guys do, but here in Nebraska we have plenty of Carp and in 40 years of fishing them I don't recall that I have ever lost one because he cut my line with his dorsal fin. Are the Carp built differently in Mass?

I am still fishing now and about an hour ago I broke off another Pike. I have been fishing for pike all year (4-6 times a week) and only hooked maybe 5 of them, 2 of them were today and only landed 2 this year. I have found trying to catch that trophy pike is one of the hardest things to do in ma.

Nice going on that pike ! My dad and I each caught a big pike last season on the same day while perch fishing. Mine was a couple inches short of the 40 inch requirement , my dads was a keeper. We were both stoked. Haven't caught a carp through the ice yet ! ;D

First of all , at about 9:45 on the lake i start cooking some food for breakfast and my phone is dying, so i put it on vibrate and as i am cooking some food in 30mph, winds my phone is vibrating, and i am wondering when it will just power off.  Now it is beeping and vibrating and i am like **censored**.  so i pull my phone out and my buddy is on the line saying monster pike, come help me so i throw the stove out of the bed of my truck.  I ripp across the lake in my truck going as fast as possible.  I get there jump out of the truck to see this huge pike go by the whole. About 15 minutes later this fish finaly turns its head up through 16 inches of ice.  so i shove my bare hands down the hole and snag the pike as its head started up the hole.
I pulled it out of the water and we all checked it out then i open its mouth to take the hook out and it is only hooked by a little piece of skin on the top of its mouth.  if he did try to muscle this fish in it would of be gone.

some crapy cell phone pics for now.
