Well that's not much added weight, and looks like it would make for good storage.

I am sure I saw it here on Iceshanty, and probably here on this thread....but I found some broom clips and attached them to the back wall of my Yukon Fish Trap.  One less thing to roll around or get buried in there.  Next little project may be a holder for my Little Buddy heater and and extra propane bottle.

May have been here before, but I didn't see it. Thank you for posting! Never occurred to me that something so simple could save a ton of grief tracking down those pesky, rattling poles. If you haven't seen Dave Genz's tips on you tube modifying his sled, you might want to give it a peek. See what you think of his solution to his Mr. Buddy. Pretty slick.  :tipup:

Ya, that's the one. I am a little reluctant myself to put those 'L' brackets he uses to hold his heater. I can just see myself dropping the canvas and tearing a hole through the side. I am lucky like that. Might try to cobble together a pair of  "slots" from aluminum to attach to the shelter base and fasten the "hooks" on the heater. Know what I want to say, just  not sure how to get it into print. I get a working model, I will send some pic's to you since i can't seem to get photobucket to work.   :tipup: TrikerJohn

Wetline, just curious if u got a weight before and after you built the fiberglass deck?
Or are u able to remove the deck and weigh it?

This spring I may do something similar.

Just bought the Clam Big Mouth, and i am pumped and ready to modify. Thanks to the idea from someone on here i will be attempting to build a fiberglass deck with footprints and storage compartments. Will post progress pics.
Will be using a very stiff form of cardboard for the pattern.
(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)
The compartment on the right will be rod storage. Will be installing a hinged door.

No i did not weigh it, but if i was to guess it would be around 10-12lbs. I have no way of weighing it. When i finished it i tried to lift it as if i was putting it into my jeep. I can feel it but was able to. I am working on a way for one person to be able to lift it without injuring your back. Using a series of straps.

The pictures here don't do the shelter justice, you have to see the you tube video to fully appreciate all the work that has been done. Maximum fishability in a small, neat package. Very Zoot!

PS-My Clam Scout is on the way to your crib so you can bling it out for me ;D

Very nice wetline! I like the rod holder compartment, I use a HT rod holder and added a piece of coroplast plastic to stiffen it up and still got 1 of my poles broke. Thanks for sharing, We just lost our ice so now I have some spare time to make a few "adjustments" to my scout  ;D

Would be interesting to see the weight of the fiberglass. My mod with the Milk crates, lid and cushions weigh 13lbs.

I think if you just assume Clams weight is accurate of your stock sled (38lbs) and weigh the whole thing now (empty). Then just subtract the two?

Great job wetline005!  Exactly what I wanted to do with mine but I was afraid that the cardboard/fiberglass wouldn't be very strong.

Thanks! I've always wanted to do this, but using wood would of been way to heavy, and when I seen your fiberglass tip I found my answer. My first experience with the glass was not good. If I did it again I'd use the cloth and do it in a warmer environment. As for it being strong enough, I didn't ever plan on putting a lot of weight on the deck itself. I would stick with one layer but cover all areas a little better next time. Thanks for your tip.

To more efficiently fill my trap.

1:  I use a plastic tool box 22in x 10in to keep my fish separate and not slimming everything else.  Much easier to filet fish when they are frozen flat.  Don't keep much over 22 inches unless I cut the tail off.  As a bonus it looks like I might be going to work.

2:  Plastic office filing boxes are good also I have a pair in my hooch.

3.  Last of the most important modifications was to add 4 wheels.  They flip up when not on pavement.  Used snowmobile thin 5 inch wheels.  I drag the Voyager and on pavement the wheels rule.

@wetline and eric

My wheels are turnin to do something very similar to my rover 1. Is there a certain kind of fiberglass cloth and resin I should look for? Heck I dont know, sorry if thats a dumb question, never done anything with fiberglass. Any tips to save me the hassle and added trips to menards 30 miles away would be appreciated. Doesnt look like rocket science, but I know how these things go. Im thinking of doing something similar to wetlines sled.

The fiberglass resin it where alot of the support comes from. Think of it like epoxy with cloth for extra support.
I know alot of guys in the audio business make speaker boxes using fleece material, and its alot cheaper, and stretches to almost any shape.
The fleece is thicker and more absorbent, thus soaking up more resin and making it stronger.

Check this video out here: Fast forward to like the 2min 40sec mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8cz_5eP81U

Basically make a mold using cardboard like wetline did, cover with fleece and coat it with resin (u can use spray adhesive to help hold it to the cardboard, not needed tho). U can use the fiberglass cloth for added support in corners, but for what we are doing you prolly dont need it.

This way will be a little heavier, but much stronger.

My advice would be do it in a warm climate. The resin sets up a lot faster. I also started out with the fiberglass mat, and it was a mess. After learning about the cloth I purchased some and it worked out a lot better. The resin was not cheap and the directions said to put a layer of resin, then cloth, then resin to cover cloth.  That took way more resin than I expected to use. If there's a way to avoid using that much I'd try it. Other than that just take your time and do small areas at a time covering entire deck both sides.

@baitbucket: Very helpful info. I will be considering this.
@wetline: Thanks for the advice. So I will be looking for fiberglass "cloth" not the mat if I go this route.

Like I said I know how these things go so always willing to take advice and learn.

Since my shanty isnt a fish trap I'll have to start a new topic. I started this project last night so Ill post pics soon.

@wetline

Couple more quick questions if you dont mind. What did you use to glue the carpet on? I was thinking of a 3m spray adhesive or something like that. Also, where would you recommend I go to buy the fiberglass supplies?
