Title: Western WI Get Together
Post by: Michaelo on Dec 13, 2016, 12:43 PM
I know we did this a few years back but was kinda limited due to warm Temps. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in going out and giving it a try again. Thinking early January for a date. Not sure on lakes but I've liked the chetek chain last few years. Really open on suggestions to figure something out.

I am up for it.  Chetek chain, or any other lake sounds good.

Long in Washburn or Chippewa county?

Long lake in Washburn county just east of Sarona. I heard it was always good crappie fishing, and I guess walleye are starting to make a come back. I guess the lake totally iced over last Friday. Anyway I always wanted to try ice fishing out there. They say there is good crappie fishing by the narrows? That would be the boat landing on the north end off B.

Chetak Chain is way better than Long. Long needs another 2-3 years.

I would be interested in meeting up on Chetek chain. I am there most weekends. I'm can't really travel anywhere else for fishing, so if you end up in Chetek, I'll try to be there.

I  believe that every weekend in January is open, so I have been waiting to see what works for everyone else.

I would suggest NOT on Jan. 21st. They have the big fireman's fund ice fishing tournament that Saturday and the lakes are packed.

Saturday the 7th chetek chain sound good to everyone? I've fished it a few times and have had decent success but if anyone has some spots they wouldn't mind sharing that would be good too.

I think I will be around on the 7th. If people want easy access, there is a public landing on Lake Chetek right by the airport. People fish out there a fair amount. I have only fished those spots a few times catching a mixed bag of perch, gills and crappies...

Well since it's going to be pretty chilly on Saturday anyone down to change this to say a weekend in late February? Usually a little warmeet and be able to access most of the lake by vehicle. Just a suggestion. As much as I love ice fishing I'm not the type to sit in a shack while it's freezing out.

That is fine with me.

Last weekend in February is good for me. Usually real good ice, little longer days, and maybe nice temperature.

Yea Saturday high temp 4 with a 10 mph NW wind not very motivating to go sit out on ice.

Let's try this again!

I know that for the last couple years we haven't been able to  get a date, or lake to fish.

What are all of your thoughts regarding date, and location.   Speaking only for myself,  I am willing to travel farther north if that works for everyone.
Polk Co, Rice Lake, Hayward area, Turtle Flambeau Flowage, Chetek area, Miller Dam Flowage, or any and all suggestions.

Let's make this happen this season.

I'd be in!
As long as I'm free any of those locations would work for me, I usually travel 1-2 hours to fish anyways. As of now, I have a trip planned for new years and January 12-14 but am otherwise free.
If the cold keeps up, maybe a mid December trip would be doable. Wouldn't be able to drive vehicles but ATVs and foot traffic should be realistic.

Lets make it happen!

The last get together was in Chetek on Prairie lake.  If memory serves,  it was the first Saturday of December.   The ice was very sketchy, and  we had drizzle  that day.  In fact we quit early due to concerns about ice conditions.  The turnout was decent,  but may have been better in a  different location.

While the weather is looking promising,  let's wait until after Thanksgiving to set a  date,  that way it will give us a better look at the weather and ice conditions.   Hopefully we will have had a  successful deer season,  and also have an opportunity to get on the ice.

As far as location, let's get 3-5 lakes as suggestions,  and then we can vote on it.

At the last get together on Prairie Lake, I drove to the Veterans Park with intentions of joining the fun but the ice conditions, and rain sent me home. I agree that the get together should be a little later, maybe the first weekend after new year's. That way the ice should be really good, and atv's and snowmobiles should be safe.

I would definitely be in if the get together is on the Chetek chain. If it is somewhere else I would be 50-50, just depends on family and other commitments.

Hope it happens this year. Looking forward to meeting people.

I would be open to driving up somewhere if there is enough notice. I'm sure my wife would be with, but she enjoys ice fishing more than open water fishing

Speaking of long lake, years ago we consistently took limits of crappies and gills off laundry mat rd.  Any where from in front of the landing to out front of the island was always very productive.  Best of luck on your get together.

Did this die? I'm heading to Upper Long on the 20th. Meet at the Narrows boat ramp, 6:30 Am if you want. I can only fish till Noon, but it won't take that long. Maybe I'll cook something.

Just as a heads up the Rice Lake fishing team is having a high school tournament on Long Lake (Washburn County) on February 1st and our Community Ice Fishing Contest on the 8th on Red Cedar Chain. Maybe you guys want to have the get together on the 8th and come support our fishing team?

Haven't ice fished Long before but dying to try it! I'll definitely find a way to be there if this ends up being on Long!
Interested regardless though - always looking to learn more about ice fishing and meet some fellow hardwater Wisconsinites!
