Hey Gary,   I think me and some buddies are fishing Honeoye on Sat. maybe we could shoot over to Candice and try for some smelts.  Will you be out there
that afternoon?   We may just fish H. Lake for a while as I've heaard the lake is pretty crazy with sleds and quads.   Can you only get them at night?
I assume you need a floating light- is this correct?

look forward to your response.

i use small jig tipped with a spike. I try to work them up to the Ice, So that I am Fishing in only
a foot of water or so. the faster you get them out the faster you can catch another one!
any one that want to join me WELCOME!!! The more the merrier. i fish at the boat launch.

Dave, Is that you? I went Fishing with you before! Lost my wallet!!!! I live on canadice rd. Now

Hey Gary,

We are interested in getting out on Sat.   We would probably get there mid afternoon and set up for some perch first.   Can you let me know
1. where you will be putting in?   2. What setup we need?  hooks size- I would assume really small, and bait.  We have lanterns.   Also, how big are these smelts - decent size?   When we get closer to making the decision, I'll let you know and give you my cell no.

Thanks for the info.
Jim.

Is there some special paper work that is required to fish Canadice?  Is it like the permit that is required for Hemlock.    Has anyone heard report about ice fishing on Hemlock?

I have been out on Honeyoye 4 times - skunked each time - Smelting may be the way go.

I fish the boat launch. you need jigging pole, small jigs, lantern ,spikes the smelt are about the size of your longest finger.I get there just before dark. they are in the top five fish to eat in my book!

Same permit as hemlock. You can down load it or pick one up at the north end of hemlock. It is the blue and white kiosk near the circle driveway

Hey Gary,

I think we are going to get down there tomorrow.  I expect to get there around say 3ish.  Get setup for some perch or lake trout for a while, then switch to smelt.  How is the ice down there?   We will have some cold beverages as well if we get a chance to meet.   How do you cook these little
guys?   Last time we did smelt we just cut the head and tail and fried them up...............see ya tomorrow.

A few years ago I hit them hard on Hemlock at the south end right at the drop off. It was in early March but they were typically 6 to 8 inches long. A lot bigger than my fingers. I never realized you could target them at night with lights. Thanks for the info and I'll give it a try soon.

I have not been down in a week or so,But I drive by the lake every night on my way home from work, and lots of nights there are still a couple of guys there at 1 AM. That tells me they are still getting them.
I might try some night after work, Or this weekend for sure, At the boat launch.

Thanks Gary, appreciate the update, you and I spoke road side a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon, you have been very helpful.

Sounds like the ice is still pretty solid, I know we are only 20' offshore but still would rather not take a dip, especially in 10' of water.

Use qaution.
Being shallow and with all the run off this past week I think it might start to become a bit unstable.

Took a walk down last weekend and found some real soft spots. Didn't break through but backed away.

Went out Friday night there was enough ice to be safe on(about 8"). The smelt was on, brought about 75 ore more home.

Hey guys, with ice fishing behind us for the year I was curious if anyone smelted in the creeks around canadice and hemlock. I have gone a few times around Cayuga lake and had thin to no results and I’m looking for a little change of scenery. Any tips would be great!
