What is the alcove res.?? Is that over where the dam is? I have never heard of it before!

The Alcove Res. is no where near the Sacandaga Res. It is in southern Albany county, I believe. Sac Res is in Saratoga and Fulton Counties.

Yup, 7 lines of ANY kind, in all of NY, except Lake Champlain. There it is still 15 lines, but now of any kind.

How much rain came through? Did it seem like a big setback?

We got a inch of rain, 2 days of warm temperatures and the wind is crazy out there right now, and for the next 4 days. The wind for the next few days dont get under 15mph.

with the soft ice and the wind, things dont look good...

had friends fish it this afternoon/evening. 3.5-4" hard, clear, black ice. shorelines were good yet. as long as the wind hasn't broken anything open the cold that's coming should only build from here on out

There are pike there, big ones. You should be able to hook up with one. There are also smaller lakes nearby Sac. with large pike as well.

It looks like you guys are some reputable fisherman, I just need an honest answer before I burn a vacation day spend almost 500$ and 3 days of my time. I'm coming from Philadelphia Pennsylvania to target pike. I got my mind on the great sacandaga lake but from a lot of stuff I'm hearing is it is a really slow lake but you do have the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime. I'm looking to have a good time chase some flags and have a shot at a decent sized pike. the Sac is a 4 hour drive from my home. If you guys were in my position do you have an opinion on what lake I should fish? I dunno if it will be worth it to spend all my Time and money going to sacandaga and coming home skunked that would really stink. I don't live up there so I really don't have the time to put into fishing the lake. Just want a nice weekend I can take a few pics of some fish and have fun. Can anyone help?

you are correct there are some "fish or a lifetime" this lake can be very tricky. from finding the fish, to getting them to bite to the general conditions itself. I would say the bays should be fishable and the main lake was froze over this past weekend but I guess it blew open. I would think if the wind dies down it will freeze over again quickly.

you will get different opinions from everyone. if your looking for pike, then Sacandaga will probably be your best option for that weekend.

Except for shore ice the main part of the lake is open with white caps. You can also see some large ridges of ice that has been pushed up on the ice. This end still has ice but doesn't look good...h2l
