Nils Master 6 inch question
« on: Jan 02, 2011, 07:53 PM »
Hey guys,

Would a Nils Master 6 inch drill just as fast as or faster than  a 4" lazer hand auger?

I have a chance to buy a 6 inch Nils Master for 75.00.......It was NEVER used.  I get the first shot at it.  I think that is a pretty good deal don't you?

The only downfall is that the lazer blades are cheaper than the Nils. BUT, if I take care of it, it should last and be a better auger overall...correct??

Thanks in advance for your input

Just got the 8ich Nils man it is fast tough to say if the 6 would just faster than the 4inch other auger but for that price I would personally go with the Nils. It is very fast and effortless. If you take care of the blades you should be good for a while.

Buy a spare head so when the time comes to have it sharpened or in case of an OOOOPs you can stay on the ice. Resharpening runs about $20 I think, I have 3 years on my 8" so far and no signs of a sharpening needed yet.  BTW my 8 will outdrill my partners 5" Lazer.

Buy it. Nils are the best augers by far. I have a 6 inch Nils and have had it about 6 years. Never had it sharpened and it cuts as good today as it did the day I bought it. You will love it.

easier and cleaner and lighter than a gas . if sharp probably as fast .do not slam on ice just set it and start turning . probably 1 turn is 1 inch effortlessly

I have a 4" lazer already, but I went out yesterday, and with the cold and the wind, my 4 inch hole quickly turned to a 3 to 3 1/2 inch hole quickly.  I had a 9 inch crappie that brushed the edges of the hole and I prayed that each fish I caught would fit up the hole.

I could sell my 4 inch and my 2 extra set of blades for almost the cost of the Nils. :)

I would go with the nils too.  I have the 6 inch and it goes through a foot of ice in i bet under 15 seconds.

I got an 8" Nils for Christmas. Couldn't imagine a better hand auger. If you don't want the 6", give me the guys phone number and I'll buy it! Definately go for it. Treat it like it's made of glass and it will cut forever.

Thats what I thought when I bought my first Nils back in 1997.  It was a 4".  About two years later I got the 6".  The 4" has been collecting dust since.

just replaced my 8in nils blade, brother sharpened it  totally ruined it.  cost me $70 for new blade.  when you turn in old blade they will give you a sharp blade for $34  good deal.

I've had a 6" Nils since Cabela's was the only place that sold them about 10 years ago or whatever....Haven't had it sharpened once....Treat it like it is made of glass and it will last forever....And yes, it is super fast!

Well, the 6 inch Nils auger is now safe and sound in my basement.  It looks great.  I believe the gentleman  didn't use it. If he did, he didn't use much. There isn't any paint off of the auger at all.  Now I can't wait to use it.  I think eventually I would like to get the powerhead for it. I already have a jiffy STX pro, but maybe in time I will get the Tanaka and get rid of the jiffy as well. I'm pretty sure I will sell  my 4 inch lazer real soon. It has been a great little auger, but now my heart will be with the Nils.

Thanks everyone for your vote of confidence towards the Nils.

Thats great news, You will enjoy it and, you will find that you do not need the powerhead. You should look into an adapter for a 18V cordless drill, if you get sick of hand drilling. That will be my next step with my Nils. But I have not needed to go that route yet.

Enjoy it and treat it like a baby. (don't let anyone else use it)

Just ordered the 8" Nils hand auger from Red Rock.  I can't wait to use it!  I'm not getting any younger and everything I hear and see tells me Nils is the best.

I ordered a 6" Nils from Cabelas well before Thanksgiving and was tired of waiting for even a glimmer of information from them on when it would be delivered.  So I ordered one from Red Rock and got an immediate shipping notification.  Should be here by the end of the week.   :)
Guess what?  Cabelas sent me an email today and I have ANOTHER one on way!  Must be that slow boat from Sweden finally came into port!
So WHAT DO I DO WITH TWO 6" NILS!!!!

You could sell it.  Put it on the for sale forum bet you can get what you paid for it.  Or keep it and never need to buy another.

Nice try Skidplate.....I sold it for what I paid for it: $165.   That was almost $50 more than the one I got from Cabelas, but they "had it in stock"

I do have a nice Mora 7" if you want to give me $80 for that.... ;)
