I was able to snag 3 dozen from Stop and Shop the other day.   Fried those up last night.   However I have not been out actually fishing for them this year.   I'm headed to Maine the last week of January for work.   May try to get out up there.

I haven't found any local with heads. If I did I'd fill a section in the freezer.

The one's I had are gutted and without heads.   However, they did have bags of those big old sardines from Portugal, Head on.   I got a bag of 12 or so with fish from 8 to 10 inches.   I haven't figured out if I want to use those for bait or grill em up.    If the rainbow smelt are running in Maine in a few weeks, I'll salve some for bait.

They were having a buy-one get-one sale on frozen smelt at Pricechopper not long ago... Fried up a few, not too bad but might just use the rest for bait...

Would a trout eat a dead smelt? I had a buddy ask me recently, I figured trout generally like fresh bait, and I know they like smelt in certain waters, would conclude that freshly caught smelt right from the jigging pole to the tilt would be the only way to go.
