Started ice fishing with my Grandpa, Dad & Brother when I was just a little guy..about 5 years old. He was a commercial fisherman, but still always loved to go out just for the sport of it. Thats all I ever wanted to do when I was up north at their farm was go ice fishing. Then as I grew up I got so busy with hockey and other things that I lost it for a few years...Now i've gotten back into it hardcore for the past 2 years....and im totally addicted again, just like I was when I was 5 years old!

Take a kid ice fishing and get them hooked early! Great sport...

This is my 3rd full seson so I haven't been at it very long.  Must have been fate though cause as much as I love open water I decided a few years back to make a shanty (I think that shanty weighed around 150 pounds) and  buy a used auger.   Didn't have anyone show me the ropes, just read what I could to get some idea of what to do.
Showed up at the lake with a plan and after 4 hours of no fish took a lunch break, reformulated my plan, went back to the lake, drilled some more holes and in four more hours caught two of what will always be to me the most exciting bluegill I have ever seen :) As I recall they were only about 6 inches.

Well bought my four wheeler in 1987 and also built my first hut that year as well.
snowmobile about five years after that...

Now on my third hardside hut, third portable, third auger, third fishfinder, second trailer and second snowmobile.

Still have the first four wheeler and the first wife though, both good runners! ;D

37 years.  When I was four, I had strict instructions as follows:

"When your bobber goes down, YANK hard, as high as you can, then walk straight away from the hole."

Caught my first lake trout (4lbs) that day , and a lot of other species of fish following those directions until I became coordinated enough to line fish in hand over hand, which I used to practice in the basement.

Rule #1:  Never tell your story first.

It kinda sucks for me because nobody in my family fishes or hunts. If I ever have kids though I'll definetly introduce them to hunting and fishing as early as I can

Every year I've been alive (22).

I've been trying to find a picture of my dad sitting on the ice, holding me in his arms all wrapped up when I was just under 1 year.  If I do, I'll post it up.

It definitely started the addiction.

I was introduced about 24 years ago...  in the boy scouts by a die hard fisherman.  This old guy used a busted off "open water" pole rigged as an ice pole and sat on a bucket... no fish finders, no shack, just a lot of drillin and chillin!!!  I went with him on occasion, not enough to be considered an "ice fisherman".  Times were tough and cold out there with him, and as a young guy, the draw to the warm weather fishing and the relative success rate eventually drew me away.  About two years ago, on a mild day...  WHEN THERE WERE NO DUCKS TO BE HAD IN NEBRASKA...   I reluctantly went out to a local lake with one of my best friends and "POUNDED" crappie and gills for about four hours!!!  The very next week I had a Pak-Shack III and a heater.  The next week I bought an auger and the next week began construction of my hybrid shanty.  I have been reborn to the sport and am two years fanatical.  My wife calls it an ice fishing problem!!!  Thusly, the name.
IF YOU CAN'T STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS, GO GET IN FRONT OF THEM!!!

My 36th season and loving it more then ever.I love to fish in my boat, but there is just something real special about Hardwater.I guess it must be the fact that mere mortal men can actually act like Moses and walk on water. The one thing I do know is that I will be doing it until the day I die.

I didn't start until late in life.  45 years for me.
Fisherman's Prayer
I pray that I may live to fish
          Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
       I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
           And peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be Judged
              BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

First time on ice I was about 7 y/o.  Chopped holes with a crow bar and an ax.  It was a luxery to have a spud bar especially one with a ring on top to tie a rope onto.  I ice fished about once a year until 3 years ago.  I made a trip to Fort Peck Res. and caught an 18 pound Northern and have had the ice fishing disease since then.  So you could say either 55 years or 3 years seriously.

Give a man a fish,  he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish,  he sits all day on the ice drinking beer.
